When you are painting a mural or creating a craft, getting acrylic paint on your shoes is not what you hoped for, but it happens. The first thing you need to know in the process of how to remove acrylic paint from shoes is what type of paint was used.

Although most acrylic paints are water-based, some acrylic paints can be oil-based. Knowing this will help you choose the correct products to remove paint from your leather, canvas, and suede shoes.

The essential tools you will need to take acrylic paint off of your shoes are:

  • Knife or metal file
  • Clean cloth
  • A toothbrush or soft shoe brush
  • Eraser
  • Sponge
  • Warm water

Each shoe material will require different products and different steps, and we will walk you through the process.

Will acrylic paint come off my shoes?

Yes, acrylic paint will come off your shoes.

The technique you use to remove acrylic paint from your shoes can depend on several factors:

  1. Is the paint wet or dry
  2. The shoe material
  3. If the paint is oil-based or water-based

In every scenario, you will want to scrape off the excess paint with a knife or metal file while it is wet. That way, you can prevent the paint from smearing or getting on other areas of your shoes.

How do you get acrylic paint off of shoes?

If the acrylic paint is still wet, use a knife or metal file to scrape off the paint, trying not to smear the paint on any other shoe areas.

After the extra paint has been removed, you will need the following:

  • Sponge
  • Warm water
  • Soap/detergent
  • Clean cloth
  • Small container

Now that your supplies are together, dampen the cloth and dab at the acrylic paint until you have wet the area well and blotted away most of the stain. Try to remove as much of the paint as possible.

Next, you will make a soapy solution with warm water and soap in a small container. Using the sponge, dip it in the warm soapy water and gently scrub the stained area with acrylic paint.

Make sure your water remains warm, and keep rinsing your sponge regularly in a bowl of clean water. Doing this will help to prevent you from smearing the color on other parts of the shoe.

Remember to be gentle and patient during this process. You may have to repeat some of the steps multiple times to get your desired results.

You may also use a soft toothbrush to help you scrub away the acrylic paint stain, but you have to be gentle. Cleaning too aggressively can damage the shoe’s material.

Can you remove acrylic paint from leather shoes?

Do not forget to apply a leather conditioner to your shoes after letting them air-dry in a space out of direct sunlight.
