Positive
  • I have bad knees and bad feet and they felt better immediately with these shoes. I thank my ortho doctor for recommending these Hokas. I could have saved a lot of money over the years if I only knew about these sooner.
  • Used to be loyal to Asics Gel but they aren't made like they used to be so I tried the Speedgoat 2. Love these!!! A little noisy when running but the Vibram soles grip the ground nicely. I am impressed. The fit is snug and secure.
  • If you are an avid trail runner, do yourself a favor and buy the Hoka One One Speedgoat 2. I've run seven miles in these so far and it was raining and the ground was muddy and slippery and not once did I feel like I was losing traction. These are the real deal.
  • Definitely will order another pair. These shoes are awesome right out of the box--comfort, fit, grip and stability.
  • In total, I have four pairs of these shoes. My podiatrist recommended these. I get the men's version as a woman my feet are wider. Wish the color options in men was better.
  • The tox box is narrow but I am okay with it. These shoes are really comfortable and great for running the trails. You won't feel the rocks or the roots of the trail while walking or running.
  • I consider myself a shoe perfectionista and these are the best shoes for walking the dog and running. I learned about the Hoka brand from a sports doctor years ago and have tried several since learning about them. The Speedgoat 2 provide the best traction, support, and cushion. I wear the men's version because the women's don't work for my orthotic.
  • My go-to shoes changed the way they were made so I switched to these and am so glad I did. My Hokas are like my feet are deep couch sitting. They have so much cushioning.
  • Four months ago I had lumbar fusion surgery and these shoes offer great support, stability and traction.
  • I can't believe that when I run in my Hoka One One Speedgoat 2, nothing hurts!
  • If you have sore joints, you will benefit from all the cushion that the Speedgoat 2 provides. This is a really nice shoe. Great on all terrains and all weather conditions. Very comfortable.
  • I got these in a larger size, half size bigger than my hiking boots. Love how light these are. Great cushioning. After a three mile walk up steep hills and rocks no blisters or bruises and sore spots.
  • For my 80th birthday I got these as a gift from my son. All I can say is wow! These shoes fit like a glove.
  • I purchased this shoe because of the cushioning and the weight. As a hiker who is getting older these things are important. A little snug in the beginning but I didn't mind as they didn't take long to break in.
  • I got these shoes to run a Spartan Race. These shoes are fantastic! I am not new to Hoka and used their shoes for running in general. The only downside if I had to choose something, is that these shoes don't drain as fast as I would like when submerged in water.
  • I run a lot and my biggest issues are with my knees and feet. I am used to wearing Salomons but I am glad I tried the Speedgoat 2s. My feet and knees feel so much better. These shoes have a lot of cushioning and great grip. The toe box could be a little wider but I love the built in rocker because it helps propel me forward.
  • I love these shoes. The Hoka One One Speedgoat 2 is the best running shoe ever.
  • Went up a half size but they were too loose so went to my normal size and just breaking them in. The cushion is just what I wanted.
  • By far these are the best shoe, I love them. I work in the hospital operating room and these are money well spent.
Negative
  • This shoe is way too tight and too small
  • The cushion is great but this shoe is too narrow.
  • Found the cushion to be too much. It causes ankle rolling when on uneven surfaces.

Outsole

The design of the outsole on this one is meant to ensure that the wearer received the grip that they needed while the shoe is being used. This shoe can handle trails like nobodies business due to the design of the outsole and the lugs that were used throughout; the lugs on this shoe are a whopping 5mm and are really able to dig into the terrain that they are used on. Another quirk about the shoe is that it can be used under more uniform conditions like roads and things of that nature without breaking or wearing down exponentially; usually, lugs break down after a few times being used but these one’s experience very little wearing down. The previous model of the shoe had very “minimal lugs in its design and the upgrade in the length of the lugs in this model of the shoe is definitely a bonus for this model; there are also various flex grooves in place throughout the design of the shoe that allows the wearer to move relatively freely while the shoe is in use.

Midsole

The midsole of the Hoka One One Speedgoat 2 is designed to give the wearer what they need in terms of cushion and to be rather responsive while the shoe is in use. The midsole of the shoe allows the shoe to be rather responsive while the shoe is being used. The design of the sides of the shoe features a geometric design that allows the shoe to really move to the will of the wearer’s foot and provides the wearer with a sense of stability; the geometric patterning in the sole unit of the shoe is one of the main reasons why the shoe is able to provide the wearer with what they need in terms of stability. The material that the shoe’s midsole is designed from is primarily injected EVA material; the use of this material allows the shoe to adapt to the wearer’s foot and provide the wearer with what they need in terms of bounce.

Upper

The upper of the shoe has been totally redesigned from that of the previous model of the shoe. The shoe now has a new color blend that allows the shoe to really give the wearer a sense of style and allows the wearer to mix their shoes with the style of other models of shoe. The design of the upper of the shoe now features reinforcements that allow the shoe to provide in terms of durability and protection for their feet; the addition of “speed trips” in place which connect the geometrically shaped parts of mesh in the design of the shoe that allow for the sense of protection and durability as well. On top of this, the material that the upper is designed from allows the shoe to dry at incredibly quick speeds; certain parts of the shoe are rather thin which explains why this feature of the shoe is so.

Weight

Definitely not the heaviest shoe in the world, that’s for sure. The design of the shoe is one that allows the wearer to really function while the shoe is in use, after all, it only weighs about 8.2 oz for women and 9.8 for men. For a shoe to be both durable and flexible is very rare but, the Hoka One One Speedgoat 2 manages to get it done. To be honest, the shoe is already a peculiar one from the get-go due to the stability that it provides and the fact that stability isn’t generally one of the things that trail shoes are meant to provide, at least not the lightweight trail shoes. For those who are seeking a shoe to run long distances in but don’t want to feel the weight that comes with the use of the shoe, consider this one for sure.

Comfort

Well, if the shoe can provide the wearer with what they need in terms of airflow and conforms to the shape of the wearer’s foot, it should be tremendously comfortable. Correct? Yes, the Hoka One One Speedgoat 2 is definitely up there when it comes to the level of comfort that is provided to the foot of the wearer. The EVA foam in the midsole is utterly incredible; it conforms to the curves of the wearer’s foot and allows the shoe to really provide in terms of it’s ability to conform to the curves of the wearer’s foot. The thickness of the material overall allows the shoe to really give the wearer what they need in terms of the protection from the outside/terrains; the last thing that one wants to feel while running in a shoe is the feel of the terrain and every single obtrusion that is present on it.

Style

Well, the style of this shoe would most likely be considered that of a trail shoe. It has all of the stylistic elements that are normally included in shoes of that design and is able to function on the level that these types of shoes generally function on. The lugs featured in the design allows the shoe to really dig into surfaces and are generally incorporated into the designs of trails shoes. The design of this shoe has been altered slightly to give the wearer what they need in terms of functionality and to provide the wearer with a bit of flair when they wear the shoe in places that it generally isn’t intended to be worn on. The upper of the shoe now has the traditional Hoka design incorporated into it which really makes these shoes stand out to the wearer and to onlookers while the shoe is being used. The shoe comes in a few colorways also; the different colorways that the shoe can be found in allows the shoe to really be used with different outfits and allows for a bit more variety for the wearer while in use.

Durability

These are trail shoes, so one thing that must be understood is that it has to provide a decent level of durability for the wearer’s foot. The sole unit of the shoe has a hardened rubber material in place that gives it the ability to really provide the wearer with what they need to really function while in use; the rubber material enables the shoe to last for a decent amount of time but, beware of using it in areas that it wasn’t designed for use on; the lugs may degrade a bit and the traction slip away if so. EVA cushioning is known for not breaking down slightly after being used for a length of time; the responsive nature of the material stays in place even after being used for an extended period of time, which is a huge plus. The upper of the shoe has all of the features that are necessary for the shoe to really last; the way that the materials are placed keeps them from coming apart after slight movement and allows the shoe to really give the wearer what they need in terms of functionality and durability.

Protection

The sole of the Hoka One One Speedgoat 2 is thick to the point that the wearer doesn’t have to worry about damaging themselves while the shoe is in use. The sheer thickness and powerful nature of the EVA foam in the midsole and gives the shoe the strength that it needs to really respond to the outside and function in the way that it needs to stop the entrance of outside materials into the sole of the shoe. The shoe also provides the wearer with a decent level of protection from feeling the effects of the outside or “terrains”. The shoes upper is also relatively thick and works to keep the entrance of outside materials from affecting the feel of the shoe overall. With that, the lugs on the outsole also keep the wearer from falling while the shoe is in use which is a plus in and of itself.

Responsiveness

In terms of responsiveness, the midsole of the shoe gives the wearer what they need so that the shoe doesn’t feel overly cushioned; EVA foam keeps the shoe from feeling overly cushioned and just responds to the feel of the wearer’s foot giving them the ability to really gain a decent level of bounce while the shoe is in use. The sole unit of the shoe features a rocking chair design; this feature gives the shoe the ability to provide the wearer with smooth transitions. The grip provided by the shoe also allows it to give the wearer what they need in terms of transitions and ensures that the wearer has what they need while the shoe is in use on the trail terrain. The level of responsiveness felt by the shoe allows it to really give the wearer what they need when using the shoe on the longer runs.

Support

The design of this shoe is one that allows the wearer to really gain a decent level of functionality and allows the wearer to do what they need in terms of gain a high level of support. The midsole of the shoe conforms to shape of the wearer’s foot in an amazing way; the material really allows the shoe to give the wearer what they need for the longer trail runs. The amazing thing about the design of this shoe is that it inherently provides the wearer with an amazing level of support.

Terrain

The shoe can be used on various terrains but, is primarily meant for use on trails. The sole unit of the shoe features several lugs by that really allow it to attack trails. The features of the shoe itself allows it to really give the wearer what it needs to function on several terrain types without giving them any type of issue in terms of ability to handle the terrain and do so without giving the wearer any type of issue in regard to slippage and functionality. For the moist terrains, the shoe has a quick dying upper that prevents it from giving the wearer any type of discomfort, at least for extended periods of time.

Price

Okay, here’s the kicker; the shoe is a bit on the expensive side. The design of the shoe has several technologies that allow the shoe to provide one with what they need in terms of functionality and comfort; there are even other technologies incorporated that allow the shoe to really function such as the lugs in the sole unit and the materials in the upper of the shoe. The price of the shoe hasn’t really changed much from that of its predecessor. The shoe still manages to function in very much the same way as that of the previous model also, only with a few minor improvements that make a huge difference in the feel of the shoe. Something else to note is the durability that is incorporated into the design of the shoe. The wearer is still able to achieve what they need to without worrying about the material in the shoe becoming damaged.

Traction

The traction felt in the shoe is on par with that provided by other shoes as well. The sole unit of the shoe has the lug in the design, remember? The lugs in the sole unit of the shoe really allow it to give the wearer what they need in terms of grip because of the fact that the lugs dig into terrains and allow for an insane level of functionality to be present in the overall design; the rubber material only compliments this aspect of the shoe’s design by ensuring that the shoe sticks to the surface that it is being used on with a great deal of surety.

Flexibility

The entire design of the Hoka One One Speedgoat 2 is one that is able to move with such ease that it almost doesn’t make sense; this doesn’t make complete sense considering the fact that the shoe is highly layered but, somehow, this effect is achieved by the shoe. The upper of the shoe moves to allow the shoe to move with the angles of the wearer’s foot; that’s just one of the quirks of the material itself, it doesn’t resist movement very much. The sole unit of the shoe is relatively thick though, which doesn’t necessarily hurt the feel of the shoe, but it does take away from the flexibility of the shoe a tad bit.

Stability

This is a stability providing shoe all of the ways. The upper of the shoe gives they need in terms of security; what the sole unit of the shoe lacks in flexibility, it makes up for in its ability to provide the wearer with a slightly secure feeling during a run on a trail. The upper of the shoe is very much the same way in that it is layered and gives the wearer what they need it to provide the wearer with a stable overall ride.

Drop

Here is yet another kicker about this shoe, the drop of the shoe is only 4mm. This is very rare for a shoe that has such a high level of cushioning to be found in the sole unit. Overall, the drop of the shoe allows it to provide the wearer with the transitions that they may need while the shoe is in use.

Key features

• EVA midsole
• Increased toe room
• Improved design
• Increased lug size

Verdict

This shoe is nothing short of amazing, to be honest. It may be a bit on the more expensive side but, still works to give the wearer what they need in terms of functionality and cushioning. The support provided by this shoe is also decent due to the feel of the material and the cushioning that is provided. The one thing that may put some back a bit is the price, but, when considered alongside the features shouldn’t do so for very long.
