Sporty sandals are a must-have for everyone’s summer wardrobe. They are the go-to shoes for vacation and for outdoor exploration. Whether you’re going to the lake or going hiking, you need a lightweight and breathable shoe that is protective and practical at the same time. The Dansko Angie sporty sandals is a perfect example for women. This pair from the Alexandria Collection is made with a microfiber lining, EVA molded footbed, and uppers made of microbuck or leather. However, if you look at it from a practical perspective, there’s hardly a box they can’t tick off. Without further ado, let’s get into the details of this pair.

Brand

Brand

Before going into the specifics of the Angie sports sandals, let’s first talk a little about the brand. Dansko was founded by Mandy Cabot and Peter Kjellerup in 1990. They first started making clogs - a type of slip-on shoe traditionally made with wooden soles - and was first created and made known for this type of shoe. Then they branched out and started making other styles. Today, they still have the same mission as before: “to improve the quality of people’s lives through great products, sincere passion and a commitment to a better tomorrow.” On top of that, they have a strong work ethic and value their employees. In fact, in 2012 they became 100% employee-owned through an Employee Stock Ownership Plan. It is truly a brand that works to serve their customers and their employees.
Adjustability

Adjustability

As strappy sports sandals, this pair offers full adjustability. They have double hook-and-loop straps with buckle closures, one around the ankle and one around the toes. Both can be adjusted for a snug fit that keeps the foot securely strapped to the shoe, but ensures it doesn’t dig into the skin. Since everyone’s foot is different, it’s really difficult for the manufacturer to get the straps to this perfect degree, so instead of trying they use the adjustability to ensure you can make your own subtle changes for a good fit.
Breathability

Breathability

As sandals, this pair is evidently breathable. There is no closed upper, but instead only a system of straps. Air can get in through the cutouts to keep the feet nice and cool in hot weather. By filtering out excess warmth in your feet, it prevents the accumulation of perspiration and odor. This model is also said to have odor control to regulate and prevent odor. Being breathable also allows this pair to dry quickly if they get wet. Do keep in mind, however, that Dansko doesn’t specify if the leather in the uppers has been specially treated to be water-resistant. But because they are sporty outdoor sandals, our guess is that they must be.
Colorways

Colorways

Four different color options are offered, though it’s a limited variety. The options are black, navy, stone, and white. The outsoles are all grey or white. Looking at the four, it just looks like a gradient from grey to greyer. There are no bolder and more colorful options available, so one thing’s for sure: these won’t make you stand out from the crowd. This could be both a good thing and a bad thing depending on your style and on what look you’re going for. If you like to express yourself through the colors you wear, you’ll find these drab and boring. However, if you have a more inconspicuous style and like to wear clothes that are more neutral, you might prefer these to brighter colors like reds and pinks.
Technology

Technology

It’s important to mention the technology, Dansko Natural Arch technology, that comes into play in this model. The footbed is engineered to hug the contours of the foot, especially the arches. This way, it provides support for them at every step. The support prevents for issues like collapsed arches, and is also intended to relieve foot fatigue. What’s more, through this technology, the arch supports stay supportive even after time. "A lot of the time with footbeds, you wear them [and] over time with weight and heat you lose a little arch support,” sais Sal Agati, Dansko’s executive vice president of design and global sourcing. “Ours retains the rigidity in the arch area that maintains the support"
Midsole

Midsole

Support is also provided in the midsole thanks to the contoured EVA that can be found there. The midsole is the layer of the sole that’s sandwiched between the insole and the outsole. Its job is to provide cushioning and help protect the foot from feeling everything you step on. As for EVA, this initialism stands for Ethel Vinyl Acetate, a man-made foam and a polymer. It’s great for midsoles because of its toughness, flexibility, and thermoplastic properties. It helps with shock absorption so that stress doesn't end up going to your foot when walking on hard surfaces. In addition, it’s considered eco-friendly - though it’s not biodegradable, it’s not made using chlorine in its production and so it’s less toxic for the environment.
Size

Size

According to Dansko, this pair runs true to size. Whatever shoe size you usually are, it should apply to this pair as well. If you want to double-check your measurements, there is a sizing chart that you can consult on Dansko’s website. Something you should note that they do not come in half sizes. If you are between sizes, it is advised to round it up to the nearest whole size. There are also no width options besides “medium.” But if you have wide or narrow feet, we don’t think you should worry anyway. The adjustability of the ankle and toe straps will allow you to tighten the straps and ensure your foot is securely and comfortably strapped down in the sandal.
Traction

Traction

All outdoor shoes need to have a good tread to provide grip and traction. When the terrain is unpredictable, you need to be well-protected no matter what kind you end up on. With a slippery outsole, you risk slipping, falling, and causing yourself injuries. These sporty sandals have a tread pattern on their outsole designed to minimize that risk. It is open at the sides so that if you step on water, the water is allowed to flow out rather than staying trapped under your sole and making you prone to slipping.
Style

Style

When it comes to style, we’ll have to admit that this pair doesn’t rank high for us. Indeed, women who really prioritize looks aren’t likely to favor this pair. The adjustable straps have a pretty rugged and masculine look. As a result, you can’t really tell if these are even meant for men or women. With these on your feet, you’ll look like you’re heading up the mountains or going to the river to explore nature. Though their practicality makes it so that they can be summer streetwear shoes as well, you might think they look too un-feminine and ungraceful. If you’re not an outdoorsy person, opt for a pair of brightly-colored wedge sandals instead.
Value

Value

We’d say that these sporty sandals are reasonably priced. They aren’t cheap, but they also won’t break the bank. This is good because swinging to extremes on either side of the spectrum is not a good idea. Some footwear is dirt cheap, but paying less now might just mean paying more later. If shoes are cheap, it’s likely that it’s because they weren’t made with super great materials or with care. As a result, they might break after just a few wears, and then you’ll have to get yourself another pair. On top of having to run to the store pretty often, you’re also wasting resources. More pricey shoes tend to be more durable so that you can make the best out of them. However, if they’re too expensive, you might be scared to wear them out because you don’t want them getting scuffed up, which defeats the whole purpose of having the shoes.
Bottom Line

Bottom Line

The Dansko Angie sporty sandals are ideal for summertime outdoor exploration. Their breathability and odor control keeps the feet cool and fresh at all times. Meanwhile, the pattern on the outsole prevent slipping and provide traction on different types of terrain, and the adjustable straps ensure a secure fit. Dansko Natural Arch technology keeps the arches comfortable and supported.

The downsides of the Dansko Angie are their lack of color variations and style. The four colors offered are all pretty drab and don’t offer any eye-catching options in more cheerful colors. The strappy look is also not very feminine or elegant, so if you care a lot about looks, you might want to stick to your wedge sandals. However, keep in mind that when in the great outdoors, you need to stay protected from your surroundings. You need the right footwear to navigate different types of terrain, and when you’re not wearing it, you could slip and hurt yourself. So when you’re out there, why not forget about how you look for a while? Instead, look around at the nature that surrounds you and appreciate all the beauty we’ve got here on Earth.
