Altra Escalante Review Facts
The Altra Escalante provides all three of the things that runners’ look for in a shoe. It provides an extreme level of comfort, is flexible in both the terrain capabilities and in the range of movement that it provides and is extremely breathable. The shoe features an engineered mesh upper that allows for an extreme amount of airflow to take place within the shoe while also allowing the shoe to conform to the shape and size of the wearer’s foot. On top of this, the shoe features a sole unit that is designed with the wearer’s feet in mind.
The outsole on the Altra Escalante is terrific. Made from hardened rubber, the sole achieves both a decent level of grip and longevity
. A fascinating thing about the outsole on this shoe is that it is fashioned directly after the base of the wearer’s foot. Altra’s Footpad system enables the wearer to achieve a greater level of flexibility while also maintaining a high level of control while the shoe is in use. On top of this, the rubber is relatively thick which allows for the longevity that the shoe has.
The midsole of the shoe is also relatively unique. The Altra Escalante features Altra’s EGO midsole foam. The foam is quite dense which enables the shoe to maintain a high level of rebounding capability
. The material itself is somewhat strange because it is fashioned from the usual EVA foam that shoes are designed with; the material is a blend of both EVA and some rubber-like material which enables the EGO foam to achieve the high level of bounce that it has. The combination of material also aids the midsole in providing the level of comfort that it is known for, it, in combination with the midsole of the shoe can conform to the shape of the user’s foot and provide an excellent surface for the foot to sink into.
Th upper of the Altra Escalante is also one that is designed with the users’ foot in mind.
The upper is fashioned from engineered mesh, a material that is known for its conforming abilities. The top of the shoe lacks any protective measures, but considering the purpose of the shoe, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. The cut of the upper is relatively sleek, which enables the material to curve to the foot; this being said, the material does do a good job of holding up during extended use, which means that despite the relatively thin cut, it is surprisingly durable.
One of the things that the Altra Escalante is known for is it’s lightweight design
. The upper and the sole of the shoe are designed in such a way as to promote speed. The upper of the shoe is fashioned from a mesh material which is known for its porous nature; the material is lightweight by natures and adds very little in the way of ounces to the shoe. On top of this, the sole of the shoe is designed from lightweight materials as well; the rubber on the outsole is relatively heavy, but Altra placed a minimal amount of it on the shoe. The foam of the midsole is lightweight by nature also, which is because of the fact that it’s another material that is just porous by nature. Finally, the shoe in its entirety weighs in at 8.8 ozs for a size 9, which isn’t bad for a shoe of its caliber.
The sock-like upper on the shoe isn’t bad, but it isn’t the most breathable either
. The material is almost knitted, which isn’t a bad thing when it pertains to comfort, but it reduces the amount of air flow in the shoe. This isn’t to say that the material isn’t breathable at all though, it just doesn’t get the full level of airflow. One thing about the shoe is that in the toe box area, Altra decided to make the material a bit stretcher and thinner which allows the shoe to be achieve a higher level of airflow in that general area. This makes up for the lack of airflow in the surrounding part sole of the shoe partly.
The Altra Escalante is known for the level of comfort that it provides. The sock-like upper of the shoe conforms to the shape of the users’ foot while also preventing irritation. On top of this, the toe box of the shoe is designed in such a way as to give ample space for the wearer’s toes
to move, a nice move by Altra. The sole of the shoe is also designed with the wearer’s feet in mind. The EGO midsole conforms to the wearer’s curves and is firm enough to provide a decent amount of support for the wearer as well. The outsole on the shoe is fashioned after the base of the wearer’s foot enabling the wearer, to achieve a decent range of motion and flexibility.
Regarding style, the upper part of the shoe is relatively aesthetically pleasing
. The upper of the shoe has bee given a minimal design; the shoe lacks many coverings on the upper and the sole portion of the shoe is designed to fit the wearer’s foot relatively well. The sole is color blocked which allows the shoe to look relatively simple and elegant. This minimalist design of the shoe is one that allows the shoe to be able to be worn in a variety of places and clothing styles. The one thing about the design of the shoe is that the outsole portion and it’s foot pattern isn’t the most attractive.
The design of the shoe may not look like one that allows for a decent bout of longevity,
but it is. The sole portion of the shoe is fashioned from materials that allow the shoe to hold up for a decent number of miles without requiring replacement. The sole is hardened rubber and, despite the limited amount of it on the shoe, it holds up relatively well; this is because of the thickness where the material is placed. The midsole, being fashioned out of a hybrid material has improved durability as well, mainly because of the elastic nature of it all.
In terms of protection,
the Altra Escalante doesn’t have very much of it. The upper of the shoe is rather minimalist in design and has none of the usual of plastic coverings on the heel or forefoot area. Altra tried to combat this lack of protection by making the mesh of the upper rather thick, enabling the shoe to retain a decent level of stopping power during use. The sole of the shoe is also quite thick, enabling the shoe to have a decent level of protection for the base of the users’ foot.
The midsole area of the Altra Escalante is designed to provide the wearer with an overall responsive
, comfortable ride. The EGO foam in the midsole of the shoe is designed in such a way as to give the user a decent level of comfort while the shoe is in use. This comfort is mainly because of the materials ability to conform and redirect the pressure taken in during use, outward. The responsiveness of the material can be likened to that of Adidas’ boost material
in that it has a decent level of shock absorption and energy redirection.
The sole of the Altra Escalante provides a decent level of support for the wearer. This is because the material that makes up the sole of the shoe maintains its firmness throughout use while still conforming to the curves of the user’s foot. There is a substantial amount of the EGO foam in the heel of the shoe, allowing for curves of the heel to be supported
throughout use while the knit upper also allows for the outer portion of the shoe to be supported during use.
Regarding terrain capabilities, this shoe still takes the cake. The Altra Escalante’s design is one that enables the shoe to be able to maintain its dexterity throughout use. The upper of the shoe is made of mesh, but due to the closeness with which the fibers of the shoe are knitted, it is still able to be worn in the colder climates
with minimal discomfort. On top of this, the material is also relatively durable which means that being worn on rougher terrains shouldn’t bother it very much. The sole of the shoe is designed in such a way as to enable it to be able to hold up and maintain its grip on a variety of terrains. This is mainly because of the foot-like design of the outsole.
The price of the shoe is actually not that high when compared to that of other brands. The Altra Escalante has been priced midrange; for the technologies made present within the shoe, there is a decent level of value within the shoe. The addition of the EGO foam within the sole of the shoe and the foot pad on the outsole allows the shoe to deliver a level of comfort above that of other shoes. When this is considered alongside the durable mesh design of the upper, the price of the shoe speaks for itself.
The traction achieved by the Altra Escalante is superb. The footpad design of the outsole is made from a hardened rubber material, a material that promotes overall grip. On top of this, the materials also feature a tread like design throughout the pad. The tread-like design enables a greater level of grip to be achieved by the wearer. When used in tandem with the range of movement that the footpad allows, the traction gained by the shoe is definitely above par.
The Altra Escalante is designed to promote maximum flexibility. The upper is fashioned from a mesh material that features very little in the way of coverings. The lack of coverings and the material itself allows the shoe to bend with the movements of the users’ foot with little to no problems. The upper of the shoe, despite the cushioning throughout, is also sock-like, enabling it to have an even greater level of flexibility. The sole of the shoe features a footpad pattern which also allows the shoe to achieve a great range of motion. The foam midsole that is featured on the shoe allows it bend in a way that is usually not possible by the midsole of shoe’s; this is mainly because of the amount of cushioning
. The combination of materials that make up the midsole of the shoe is the main reason for the sole’s flexibility. It can hold its shape while still retaining the form of the general shoe.
The design of the base of the shoe is one that enables it to provide a stable overall ride. The shoe is designed in such a way as to allow the user to maintain sure footing while on the move. The lack of rising in the sole of the Altra Escalante also helps to prevent rollover. The upper, while being sock-like
fits snugly enough for the shoe to provide the security on the sides of the shoe that is needed.
Another fascinating thing about the shoe is that it features Altra’s no-drop sole
design. This, like the name implies, means that the shoe itself, has relatively no drop. This allows for smoother transitions while the shoe is in use and prevents discomfort while the wearer is running in them. The lack of heel-to-toe ratio could be explained by the shoe’s use of the footpad in the sole of the shoe and also by the thin midsole section used in the design.
• Footpad outsole
• Knit upper
• No-drop dole design
• EGO foam midsole
All in all, the Altra Escalante is designed in such a way as to promote overall comfort while the shoe is in use. The design is one that allows the shoe to be used on a variety of terrains while still maintaining its shape and comfort level. The upper, being knit is exceptionally comfortable and when compared to the uppers of various other shoes’ is quite remarkable.
