Editor’s Conclusion
Is there anything more inviting than a brand that knows what they are doing? I am extremely cautious about where I purchase my hiking gear from. I want to be 100% sure that the company is reputable and reliable, the 2 R’s that I know I have to be sure of, especially when it comes to footwear.

Talking of reputable and reliable brands, Hoka has got to be one of my faves. The brand boasts superior technology, high-performance results, and quality. They have experts in the industry who have great knowledge of what hikers need and want in their footwear.

The Hoka Anacapa's are a perfect adventure or day-to-day hiking boot. They are supportive, cushioned, durable, and give excellent traction.

Key Features

Comfort

With a name that means 'fly over the earth,' it's a fair comment to make that Hoka are serious about making their shoes comfortable. Hoka likes to make footwear that acts as a cushioned rest for your feet, rather than an uncomfortable ride.

The Hoka Anacapa benefit from a molded compression EVA midsole to give shock absorption and they have a PU sock liner to give that bed of cushioning that your feet really require on long hikes.

Design

Although the main thing you search for with any pair of walking boots is the performance aspect, design is also a key feature that we consider.

Hoka design their footwear to be bold and unique. These definitely are showstoppers and you'll not be missed on any trek. They are designed with comfort in mind, durability, and high performance. They use lightweight nubuck leather as their primary material, both flexible and lightweight - it will give you a sturdy but comfortable experience.

The tall collar is both padded for comfort and gives the user better stability and they benefit from an EVA midsole, another feature that gives extra cushioning.

One of the more endearing features of the Anacapa’s is the outsole, made with Vibram Megagrip rubber and with a generous 6mm drop. They give a great amount of traction and grip on both wet and dry surfaces. The lugs provide great stability and add to the grip you have as well.

In a nutshell, the Hoka Anacapa’s are designed to give your feet the hug they need on any adventure.

Protection

There are many things you can do without on long walks, protection is not one of them. If you're going to be venturing off the beaten track, or up a mountain's edge, then you need to have footwear that will protect you from unwanted debris, uneven ground, and or lose ground.

The Anacapa's have the advantage of a Gusseted tongue to help protect from unwanted debris, extended heel geometry (not only for protection but for a smoother transition), waterproof nubuck leather, and they are also protected with PFC-free water repellency treatment. So, with the Hoka Anacapa Mid GTX, you are covered!

Price

I found the price to be rather reasonable. Given the technologies that these boots benefit from, they are hardy to unexpected terrain and weathers, stylish, and will last you a long while. If you’re serious about the outdoors, you’ll already be aware of the fact that if you want quality, you must pay for it, but don't be put off.

Comparison to Similar Hiking Shoes

Now Hoka isn’t for everyone, and some people just aren’t into them. If you’re one of them, then perhaps the below options may be a better option for you.

Salomon X Ultra 3 Mid GTX – Salomon is a great brand. Like Hoka, they know their stuff and their footwear proves it. The Salomon Ultra 3 is another boot destined for adventure. They provide comfort through the GORE-TEX technology, an exceptional ride with the Descent Control Technology and the sturdy rubber sole will give you a flexible yet strong step. Price – similar to the Hoka Anacapa Mid GTX.

SCARPA Maverick Mid GTX – Another striking option boasting GORE-TEX technology and EVA-CM Midsole - they are a great choice for any fast hikes. SCARPA Crossover/HDR rugged outsole is another feature that these hiking boots benefit from. Again, similar in price to both the Salomon’s and the Hoka’s.

Verdict

I mentioned earlier that Hoka footwear isn’t for everyone, but I love them. I think their innovative design is both bold and trendy.

The level of technologies used by Hoka in the Anacapa Mid GTX boots is going to be a great comfort on any hike and will give your feet the cushioning and protection they need. I do not doubt that once you buy Hoka, you’ll be a returning customer.

I can’t really fault these boots; they may fit slightly on the narrow side but as long as you are aware of this there really is nothing else that I can forewarn you about. Take your time when deciding as many great brands offer value for money, style, and durability.
