Hiking boots are an exceedingly important part of your hiking gear. They are after all going to carry you and give you the comfort you need to complete your hikes. The hiking boots we are reviewing today are appealing to look at and offer the technologies you will need to enhance your hiking experience.

The Columbia Newton Ridge 2 is a great choice for a hiking boot, with features such as Omni-Tech waterproof membrane, Omni-Grip rubber outsole, and a Techlite lightweight midsole. They are durable, lightweight, and offer serious traction.

The boots are both comfortable and offer impeccable performance. One more benefit is the option of purchasing either standard or wide with regards to width.

Key Features
Key Features
One of the great joys of buying new hiking boots is seeing what different technologies they have to offer, and the Newton Plus II has quite a few:

PU Coated Leather, Suede, and Mesh Upper

The perfect combo for a breathable hiking boot, the coated leather means you don't need to worry about the boots becoming discolored or wearing down after use in the elements.

The suede is a nice soft material that is great for comfort on walking boots and the mesh upper is perfect for allowing your feet to breathe and for air circulation.

Omni-Tech Waterproof Membrane

Hiking boots, in my opinion, should always be waterproof, that is unless you plan to have a pair of walking boots specifically for winter and another pair for summer.

Imagine being caught out in a shower and your boots not being waterproof, that sludge on the way back, and your feet feeling shriveled. There's no worry about that with the Newton Plus II; these boots have the advantage of Omni-Tech membrane - this feature allows your feet to stay dry and well supported on all of your journeys.

Techlite EVA Midsole

EVA is a material that deserves a place on the list of features as it really offers that comfort and cushioning that you're going to need while you're stepping off the beaten track.

It's spongy, cloud-like, and thick and you will, without doubt, feel the benefits of this midsole.

Omni-Grip Outsole

The Newton Ridge Plus II has the benefit of an Omni-Grip outsole; it's slip-resistant, non-marking, tough, and offers great traction. My only concern is that it can wear quite quickly.

Other than that, it's a great bottom.

Other Worthy Mentions

Comfort is always key, so the fact that the Newton Ridge Plus II is plush with cushioning around the collar is an advantage. It's not unusual to feel the strain on the lower calves and ankles on longer hikes, so padding is always welcome.

The front part of the boot benefits from toe protection, which, as hikers and walkers you will know, is paramount. Protecting your feet from sharp stones and uneven ground is really important to prevent injury.

Design

These hiking boots are extremely easy on the eye. They could happily be worn with multiple outfits and look great with jeans as well as your hiking gear. With the option of at least 8 color choices, you are spoilt for choice and are bound to find a combination that suits your taste.

Versatile, comfortable, sturdy, and ready to take a punch (so to speak), these boots are a great choice. The seam-sealed construction adds for a smooth look and an even better waterproof boot.

The D-caps lace closure can be firmly wrapped up to the ankles for that added support. The rear of the boot is always protected by a rubber cap.

Price

Considering the technology features and comfort these boots offer, I don't find the price of great concern. They are well worth the price in my opinion.

I'm a big believer in paying for quality, and I'd rather pay a higher price for boots that are going to be long-lasting and comfortable, rather than a quick cheap fix.

Use

You're not going to be disappointed with these boots in colder climates; however, they don't have the Thinsulate that other boots specifically for winter hiking have.

The Newton Ridge Plus II is a versatile boot, and should you wish to wear it with things other than your walking gear, i.e. jeans, then you will be fine to do so. They are a trendy boot that would give that stylish finish to a casual outfit.
Comparison to Similar Hiking Boots
Keen Targhee III Mid Waterproof Hiking Boot - This is a real robust boot, it's got adventure written all over it. This mid-profile hiking boot benefits from KEEN.dry Waterproof membrane, Cleansport NXT Technology for odor control, dual-density EVA footbed, and an all-terrain rubber outsole. It's perfect for long hikes and all-day use. The price is on the higher side but, the boot is well worth it.

Another great product we reviewed is the Columbia Redmond III Hiking Shoe, so make sure to check it out as well.

Palladium Pampa Sport Cuff WPN - From one extreme to the other, the Pampa sport has a much more casual look to it and it is definitely a boot you could pair with jeans or casual pants. This adventure-calling boot has two-tone leather, a padded tongue and collar, Ortholite removable footbed, and a rugged rubber outsole. Resting at an affordable price, this boot, again, is worth a look.
Verdict
To sum it up, the Columbia Newton Ridge Plus II has everything you need to have a comfortable and great hiking experience, be it in sunshine or rain. I especially like the versatility of this shoe and the combination of materials to offer that lightweight, breathable boot construction.

My only comment to make would be to consider the outsole. Although made from a good compound, it has been known to wear easily. Possibly a boot for an easier hike rather than a mountain daredevil.
