Outsole

Outsole

Dr. Martens is well-known in the shoe industry, mainly for their 1460 eight eyelet work boots, that became a classic, go-to Dr. Martens style for many. However, Dr. Martens does not only make combat boots, but has a wide selection of other styles to choose from. One such style is the Ariel fisherman’s sandal for women. This sandal features a platform design with a chunky heel, that many women like. Sticking to their roots, the Ariel sandal also has a soft Air Cushioned sole, made of gum rubber, with closed compartments filled with air, hence the name Air Cushioned. This type of outsole is Dr. Martens’ trademark, and anyone who ever owned a pair of their boots before, knows how bouncy they are.

In addition, the sole has those classic grooved edges and has been stitched onto the insole and the upper with their trademark yellow stitching. The outsole is highly durable and abrasion-resistant, as all Dr. Martens outsoles are and it is oil, fat, acid, petrol and alkali-resistant as well. It has a unique tread pattern for excellent grip and traction on both dry and wet surfaces, and is slip-resistant. This cemented construction adds a decent amount of flexibility to the sandal. The heel is 6 cm high, but since this is a platform with a chunky heel, reviewers felt stable and comfortable in them.

Additionally, Dr. Martens added a leather footbed, which is lightly cushioned for a supported and comfortable underfoot. On top of that sits a non-removable, foam-padded AirWair insole, that is lined with microfiber lining for moisture wicking and added comfort. These sandals will provide all day comfort and support to the wearer, as well as a bouncy stride.
Upper

Upper

The upper of the Dr. Martens Ariel fisherman’s sandals for women has an open construction and is made with their Vintage Smooth leather, which is a retro version of their trademark smooth leather with a two-toned color and a subtle grain effect. This leather upper not only look beautiful, but feels great on the feet as well. It comes with three straps, that are adjustable with a buckle on each.

Even though the sandals are open-toed, Dr. Martens included a soft leather and textile lining, that has moisture-absorbing qualities, for a comfortable and blister-free fit. There is also a leather strip down the middle for added support. However, this strip is removable, depending on the wearer’s preferences. While most reviewers were raving about how comfortable the Ariel sandals are, one even saying, that after ankle surgery, these are the only shoes she can wear, a few had difficulties while breaking the leather in. Namely, the strap closest to their toes would rub against them after some time, causing blisters. This issue can, however, be solved quickly, by loosening the straps a little.
Breathability

Breathability

Being that the Ariel is an open-toed sandal, breathability is a given. However, Dr. Martens included a few more features to enhance the sandal’s breathability and comfort levels even more. They added a soft leather and textile lining to the straps, that have moisture-absorbing qualities, as well as keep the feet comfortable and blister-free. Additionally, the non-removable foam insole is also lined with a microfiber lining, for moisture-wicking and a cushioned underfoot. The wearer can stroll around the city comfortably, without having to worry about their feet getting sweaty and sticky inside the sandals.
Comfortable

Comfortable

When it comes to comfort, the Ariel women’s sandal does not lack. It features a soft Air Cushioned outsole, that delivers excellent cushioning and traction to the wearer, as well as provide a bouncy stride. It also comes with a leather footbed, that features light cushioning for a gently supported underfoot. Additionally, Dr. Martens included a non-removable AirWair insole, that is foam-padded and lined with a microfiber lining for extra comfort and a moisture-free stride.

The upper consists of three leather straps from D. Martens’ Vintage Smooth leather collection, and they are fully adjustable to fit as snug or loose as you want them. There is a removable leather strip in the middle, for extra support. The leather stripes also come with a lining made of leather and soft textile, with moisture-wicking properties as well for all-day comfort. While most reviewers found the Ariel sandals very comfortable, even for long hour wear, a few experienced blisters on their toes, caused by the rubbing of the strap against them.
Durability

Durability

Traditionally, Dr. Martens shoes are highly durable and abrasion-resistant, and the Ariel sandals are no different. Featuring the iconic Air Cushioned sole, made of gum rubber with the classic grooved edges and yellow stitching, these sandals are highly durable and provide excellent traction on many different surfaces, dry or wet. Since the outsole is stitched onto the upper, it is very resistant to sign of wear and tear and can look brand new for a long time.

In addition, as with all Dr. Martens shoes, it is oil, fat, acid, petrol and alkali-resistant, adding to the overall durability of the sandals. The upper is made of three high-quality leather straps from their Vintage Smooth collection and are adjustable via the also durable metal buckles on them. Unlike many other women’s fashion sandals, the Ariel from Dr. Marten delivers style and sturdiness, so you are getting what you paid for.
Fit

Fit

While with the Dr. Martens boots, sizing up is recommended, the Ariel sandals are a different story, exactly because they are sandals. One reviewer noted, that the sandals ran at least half a size larger, so she advised buying half a size smaller, in order to get the best fit. That said, these sandals do have adjustable straps, so you can adjust how snug or loose-fitting you want them.
Flexibility

Flexibility

While it may not be the most flexible footwear on the market, the Ariel women’s platform sandal does have a decent amount of flexibility to offer to its wearers. Namely, its lightweight cemented construction and Air Cushioning rubber sole deliver a flexible and bouncy ride to the wearer throughout the day. The upper’s adjustable leather straps, when tightened to fit snug, follow the natural movement of the feet, for a non-restricted, natural stride.

They come in black and brown leather, that is easily matched with any outfit, instantly making it look more interesting and edgy. They go great with jeans, dresses, skirts, and even trousers, for a more business-casual look. No matter what you wear them with, they are sure to turn a few heads.
Support

Even though it is a sandal, the Ariel has a ton of support. Its outsole, which is made of Dr. Martens’ trademark soft Air Cushioning gum rubber, is very durable and provides excellent traction for the wearer, keeping them steady on the ground, minimizing the risk of slipping. The upper’s high-quality leather straps are fully adjustable, so the wearer can make them fit as snug or as loose as they want.

There are three straps in total, one over the ankles, one over the midfoot and one over the toes, keeping the feet securely in place. Furthermore, Dr. Martens included a lightly cushioned footbed and a non-removable, foam-padded AirWair insole, that deliver supportive cushioning to the underfoot that lasts all day long.
Weight

Weight

Anyone who has worn Dr. Martens shoes, knows that they are on the heavier side, and that is something to get used to. A pair of Ariel fisherman’s sandals for women weigh a whopping 22 ounces. While that might be too heavy for some people with foot problems, the majority of reviewers did not mind the extra weight one bit, and after some time, they got used to it and did not feel it that much.
