The slipper as we know it today, had an interesting inception and even more interesting transition throughout history. Although they date even to the pre-historic times, the modern day slipper was a status symbol for the bourgeoisie. Dr. Samuel Johnson described slippers as a shoe without leather behind, into which the foot slips easily word means “slip-shoe” or a shoe that the foot can be slipped into, and the name stuck ever since.

Cinderella had a pair of famous slippers, and so did Dorothy form Kansas. Her ruby slippers were one of the most recognizable items from The Wizard of Oz. To this day only five pairs of those slippers remain and some of original slippers can be found in the Smithsonian Institution today.

But is a slide exactly? Well it’s a form of a slipper. A slide is usually an open toe silhouette of a slipper and their particular origin can be traced back to Ancient Rome. They’re highly functional and work well with casual type of outfits, and in this review, we’ll focus on Under Armour Ignite Motion VIII sliders.

Outsole

Outsole

When it comes to choosing regular rubber over EVA, Under Armour knows that’s best. EVA or Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate is one of the best shock absorption materials available today, and they’re used in slides as much as they’re used in sneakers production. But what makes this particular outsole better by having an EVA outsole? Well, the EVA material used in the outsole features durable traction pods under the heel for lightweight cushioning and maximum comfort. The platform measures approximately 0.25 inches, and volume of the outsole is slightly thicker at the heel, so it gives the foot nice drop and to provide one hell of a comfort while wearing the slide.
Midsole

Midsole

But the high tech features and materials are not limited to the outsole. No, those are just the start. The midsole has a lot of things to be proud about as well. For instance the footbed is built with two layers of performance 4D Foam. What is 4D foam you might ask? Well, the footbed that has the 4D copies and blends nicely in the shoe, forms to exact shape of the wearer's foot and allows for a more secure and comfortable fit of the foot within the shoe. The Ignite Motion VIII is no different. The foam will make in indentation of your foot and will mold to the anatomy making the slide a lot more comfortable for walking. There’s nothing better than a custom fit in any type of shoe, and Under Armour know the value of it. The anatomical contours provide additional cushioning in the midsole, while sublimated graphic print over the footbed provides a better fit and comfort within the shoe. Oh and just a word of two about the finishing touches. The synthetic lining in the footbed has a fantastic moisture wicking properties that just make every single step in the slides comfy. Your feet will be a lot less sweaty while in the Ignite Motion VIII slides.
Upper

Upper

The upper of the Ignite Motion VIII is made out of 2 big thick strap which are joined together on the side of the upper and it’s all that this slide needs. And it’s awesome. Just think about it. How simplistic and unpretentious those straps is in the design. The technology and the materials used in the making of the upper straps are another thing, but for now let’s focus on that very simplistic but very practical upper. Yes, the straps meet (not quite) in the middle, and they’re adjustable. But what’s underneath them its what’s important as well. The upper of the Ignite Motion VIII has HeatGear lining which just accentuates the comfort from the upper of the shoe. According to the Under Armour’s website, Both HeatGear and ColdGear are the technologies made Under Armour famous, and one of the most in demand brands in the world. HeatGear shoes from Under Armour are created with performance fabric that keeps the person wearing it "cool, dry, and light" in warm or hot conditions. Just remember, HeatGear is for hot weather, and ColdGear is for cold weather. But because the Ignite Motion VIII slides are more summery sleepers, they’re lined with HeatGear lining. At the very top of the upper there are slight perforations in order to let the skin breathe even more and you’ll just love the high tech technologies used in the upper.
Comfort

Comfort

It’s hard to know what attributes to the comfort of the Ignite Motion VIII slide more. Is it the midsole or the amazing outsole? It’s safe to say that both parts play a significant role in the comfort department, and both materials used in the slide are an amazing source of comfort. The EVA outsole sure works wonders for the Ignite Motion VIII, but one can’t deny that the 4D Foam used in the footbed doesn’t provide much of the comfort as well. Yup, together they balance each other out nicely and give the maximum support for your feet in every step that you take.
Support

Support

Oh that fantastic EVA outsole. It does make all the difference in the sneakers manufactured by Under Armour and has proven to be the ace in the sleeve when it comes to support in just about any other product. Even the slides. The EVA outsole is invaluable source of support in the Ignite Motion VIII model, and you’ll be able to feel that support from the moment that you put them on your feet.
Durability

Durability

Nothing says durability as having a three different type of technologies merging into one practical and amazing slide. Seriously. The HotGear lining in the upper combined with the 4D foam in the midsole and the EVA outsole really accentuate the durability in a nice positive way. All of the materials and technologies combined make the slide more durable, and contribute to the shoe’s longevity. But the, EVA outsole features durable traction pods under the heel, that not only gives the slide a lightweight feel it makes it a lot more comfortable to the foot.
Flexibility

Flexibility

And just like in the durability segment of this review, the flexibility is really a team effort that is not to be taken lightly. All the pieces of the slide easily and effortlessly din each other and create one flexible and highly durable shoe. But you can thank the majority of the flexibility to the EVA outsole. The outsole being lightweight and the midsole being anatomically adjustable really contribute to the overall flexibility of the slide. The sublimated graphic print over the footbed adjust to the anatomy of the foot, but when it does it’s responsible for the movement, comfort and flexibility of the slide, without jeopardizing the performance of the slide.
Stability

Stability

There’s plenty to be written about the stability of Ignite Motion VIII model because that particular feature comes from the top and the bottom of the slide. That’s right. The stability of such shoe usually come from the stable outsole, but in this case the stability can be felt even from the amazing upper. Because the Ignite Motion VIII is a very loose and relaxed type of shoe, and because it doesn’t have upper that goes all the way to the heel and ankles (it’s a slipper after all) the upper has to make up nicely and to be the strongest when it comes to the providing of the stability. And it succeeds because not only the upper is made out of two thick straps that are adjustable, they’re lined with HeatGear lining. The very same can be said about the midsole. It may seem like a regular ordinary midsole, but the footbed is made out of 4D Foam that not only hug the foot, it molds on the anatomical proportions of the foot in order to keep the stability high at all times. There’s no denying that the wonderful 4d foam is one of the finest provides of stability in this slide, and aside from the other wonderful features that it provides, the stability is of importance.
Aitflow

Aitflow

The Ignite Motion VIII model is a slide, and as an open toe style slipper it provides probably the best airflow of all the UA slides. Why? Because, not only I lets the foot breathe, when the skin touches the midsole it’s greeted with a fantastic HeatGear lining. It helps the feet cool, dry and light in almost every possible condition.
Terrain

Terrain

Don’t be fooled by the fact that the Ignite Motion VIII model is an open toe slipper that’s made primarily for summer time. The slide is highly durable to walk on almost every type of terrain, but because it’s a form of a slipper it’s not recommended that you test the limits. After all, the slides are made for casual lifestyle and deciding to go walk long distances with these slides is not wise for several reasons, first being common sense.
Traction

Traction

But if there was limitation in the terrain part of the Ignite Motion VIII model, there isn't any type of limitation in the traction portion. Although the highly regarded ridging in the bottom of the outsole is lacking in the design, EVA outsole features durable traction pods under the heel that help a lot with the traction properties of the slide. Those pods make all the difference when it comes to the traction properties of the slide, and will become your guardian angel when you find yourself on a slippery or very smooth surfaces.
Style

Style

Did you noticed something when you watched this year’s Oscars ceremony? Two time Academy Award winner Frances McDormand walked out on the stage (alongside Sam Rockwell) wearing a wonderful red dress and she had a kick ass slides on her feet. Yup. That’s right. She wore slippers on a formal event like the Oscars like the true boss that she is, and she looked amazing. So, there’s that. Now, it’s not recommended that you wear slides to a formal affair events like weddings and Awards ceremonies (well unless you’re Frances McDormand) but if you do chose to pair the Ignite Motion VIII model do it more casually and not so eclectically. Let’s say you put on the slides with your favorite bathing suit and head out to the nearest pool to cool down a bit. Or if you’re more adventurous, wear them with your favorite shorts and an amazing Under Armour T-shirt.
You’ll get the kick out of the design and the comfort that the Ignite Motion VIII model provides to your feet without taking way from your personal style. Yes, the slides are a must for every casual wear aficionado, but they are so comfortable that you just might wear them to the Academy Awards, if you’ve ever invited to attend.

Bottom line

Bottom line

When it comes to comfort and stability, the Ignite Motion VIII model is probably the best on the market. There are very few faults in this slide model, and as the next series arrives, they become better and better. Of course the main culprit for that is the fantastic blend of technologies, and materials used in the making of the slides, but it’s hard to pinpoint which is more deserving to be mentioned first. The EVA outsole sure makes the slide a lot more stable, but the comfort shines through the 4d foam located in the midsole. The Anatomical foam molds to the foot and gives it a great fit and balance. And last but not least, there’s the HeatGear lining in the upper that just sits as a cherry on top of a great sundae called Motion VIII. You’ll fall in love with this shoe and then you’ll wear it for the entire summer. Your feet will be so grateful fort that.
