The slide is by all intent and purposes a form of sandals. Once upon a time, they were classified as a version of the flip-flops, but nowadays they’re known as the younger skinnier cousin of the sandals. Even Wikipedia states that the flip flops have been recently known as slides.
In some circles, they go by the name of Sliders and Wikipedia’s explanation of that is so that hipsters could classify them separately from the sandals. So that can act like they’re responsible for discovering them. Yes, that’s all stated on the official Wikipedia page for the slides. It’s true.
And much like with every other shoe, they all come with different styles, shapes, sizes. They’re usually open toe shoes, and their origin can be traced all the way back to Ancient Greece and Egypt. Their popularity in the USA grew during the early ’60s. But with the appearance of the Birkenstock slide, they became very popular all around Europe as well. The sporty look and design allow for the slides to be worn with more casual and laidback outfits. But for now, let’s take a closer look at the Xavier Ballistic slide by Ugg.
Hope you’ll like it.
Rubber occupies most of the outsole in the Xavier Ballistic
model, but what accompanies that rubber is the key here. The rubber outsole is basic for every good shoe, even a slide. And it’s no surprise that Ugg has incorporated rubber in their sliders as well, not just in their Ugg boots. But another constant feature in the outsole is the presence of Treadlite technology.
Developed and then perfected by Ugg, the Treadlite technology is the source of pride and joy for the company. The technology which treats the rubber allows the outsole to be bouncy, flexible with plenty of elasticity and a lot of cushioning. The cozy feeling that you’ll get thanks to the Treadlite treated outsole will not only last all day long, but it will improve the traction to the shoe considerably. As you can plainly see, the bottom part of the outsole does contain small indentations and ridges. For slides, they’re perfectly adequate in size and length, but the mere fact that this outsole is treated with this particular technology will give the slides more boost in the traction, and durability. A long-lasting slide that’s also stable and supportive? Yes, please.
A great addition to the midsole is the presence of the EVA foam. It’s inserted in the insole part of the slide and it’s not just anatomically contoured, it also has a surface that’s micro-textured.
Let’s break those terms down. First, a word or two about the anatomical contouring. The insole follows the shape of the foot in a precise anatomical manner, and thanks to the EVA foam
that’s located in this area, it allows the foot to mold the insole. That way your foot will be fitted perfectly to the contours of the insole and that will allow more comfort and better fit. Secondly, the surface of the insole that’s also micro-textured means that tiny lines in a diamond shape are formed on the surface of the insole. They’re there to provide better circulation to the feet, they massage the feet while you’re walking and leave you with a relaxed feeling afterward. This is a shoe that has an easy and breezy slip-on style of silhouette,
There are two materials present in the upper. The leather is the dominant material that serves as the basis of the upper. It's suede leather to be exact and it’s on the entire surface of the upper, but underneath the upper, and on the outsole of the upper lies textile mesh lining. It gives the shoes a lot of breathabilities and helps with the moisture wicking properties of the suede leather.
Both the mesh and the suede are excellent providers of ventilation, and both of them work hard in providing the aeration in the entire upper.
The EVA foam in the contoured midsole speaks volumes about the comfort of the Xavier Ballistic model. The shoe’s midsole is the shoe’s saving grace and the fact that the rubber outsole with the Treadlite technology really amps up the feeling of comfort at any point of the shoe. The contouring is done throughout the entire insole, so every inch of your foot will be covered by the anatomical molding and contouring of that EVA insole
Having an insole that’s not only entirely made out or rubber, but treated with Treadlite technology is a true pinnacle of support. Since this is a slack style of shoe, the support is not always found in every part of the shoe. The upper is basically one leather
strip, and the foot is exposed pretty much everywhere else. So, it’s critical that the outsole provides the biggest support. You’ll be wearing the slides by the pool, on smooth and wet surfaces, and the support from the bottom part of the shoe must remain high. Your feet won’t have anything to support on, so it’s best that the outsole remains strong and supportive.
Having a shoe that’s made from the best and high-quality materials
are paramount in keeping the durability at a high level. But the technology that goes with those materials is not just an unexpected bonus. They’re the great addition that makes the shoes what they are. Durable. But the fact is that high-quality rubber and high-quality leather will always have more heft, quality, and durability to them. They’ll be able to resist the outside influence better, and not to mention that the Treadlite technology in the outsole is there to ensure that the slides are flexible, durable and resistant to damage.
If this was just some regular rubber outsole, then the outsole wouldn’t have had even a fraction of the flexibility that Xavier Ballistic model has. The flexibility of that outsole allows the shoe to bend more easily without jeopardizing the structure, balance, and quality of the slide. The EVA midsole that’s also contoured brings out the flexibility and allows the foot to remain in the self-imposed mold that’s set up in the insole
Sadly, the slides are not known to be the most stable shoes out there. However, if there’s room for improvement in the stability department, Ugg has found it and implemented on two separate areas of the slide. First in the contoured EVA midsole. The foam in the midsoles hugs your foot, molds it anatomically
in the insole and allows you to feel stable and comforted all the time. Secondly, the rubber outsole that treated with Treadlite technology. By having this technology in the outsole, it becomes more durable, flexible and stable besides having any other support to lean on in this slide.
Don’t worry about the airflow. This is a slide after all. With an open toe in the silhouette, with suede leather and mesh lining in the upper. All things that attribute to the airflow and promote better breathability to the slide. Together they allow the best possible aeration and are responsible for keeping you moist and odor free.
The color selection of the Xavier Ballistic model is one of the few setbacks that this model really has. It comes in only for separate color varieties. The black is the most bought and sought after option by far (according to the official website), and then it comes in seal, forest night and nautical blue color. The seal is by far on the lighter side of the spectrum, while the other three have darker tones. It’s also worth mentioning that the black and forest night color uppers have matching midsole and outsole. The rest of the slide’s surface sadly doesn’t match in the seal and nautical blue color options for the slide. Their midsole and outsole remain gray.
With a price tag that range from 55 up to 79 dollars, the slides are not the cheapest option of course But factor in the use of the suede leather in the upper and the real rubber in the midsoles, and you’ll understand the higher price for such casual style of sandals. The slides are in the mid-range of expensive but what you’ll be getting in return for the 75 dollars that you’ll spend is a great quality shoe that is sure to be with you for a long time.
Leisure time screams out of these slides. They’re comfy, they’re sporty and they’re meant to be worn to the pool, at the beach and pretty much everywhere you, please. The warm summer days and nights will feel a lot more different with the Xavier Ballistic model on your feet. The breeze between your toes will be felt all day and all night long, and all you have to do is slip them on. They’re stylish, versatile and they’ll comfy. Everything that you need in a slide.
Thanks to the contoured EVA insole, the fit is outstanding. Why is this insole important to the fit? Well, because the contouring is done anatomically. The foam in the insole allows the molding to occur gradually, over time and the fit is paralleled with the contours of the foot. The manner, in which your foot molds the insole, will result in the fit within the shoe. Which is to say, a great one. The great fit of the slide, allows you to have bigger comfort and prevents any type of injuries to occur.
The Xavier Ballistic model is a great slide option from Ugg. Although not that great in the stability department, the fact that there’s Treadlite technology in the rubber outsole means that the traction properties are quite high in this slide. Chances are that you’ll be wearing the slides on wet and slippery surfaces, so every bit helps. The mesh and suede leather in the upper helps with the moisture-wicking properties of the shoe, and with the overall quality so don’t feel bad about spending 75 dollars on this slide.
Every single one of those 75 dollars is eventually going to be worth it, and the slide will be with you for a long time to come. The durability, flexibility, and quality of the slides are there, and although somewhat flawed, the Xavier Ballistic model will serve you well all through the summer. By the pool, at the beach and everywhere in between, the slides are going to be your constant companion at all times. They’re a great purchase, and Ugg will make sure that you are quite happy with your purchase. The slides are one of the best Ugg models and it’s up to you to find out just how good they really are.
