SmartWool is a company that strives to bring great comfort to those who enjoy the outdoors. They started in 1994 by making socks, the founders were avid skiers and were tired of their toes getting cold. They discovered how great Merino wool was, being softer, stronger, and altogether better, than most other fabrics. This helps keep their feet warmer for a long time.

The yarn was so great that they continue to use it in most of their products. They were the first company to incorporate this wool into their ski socks, skyrocketing their company and giving them the jump start they needed to bring us outdoor gear for those who do not want the winter weather to stop their adventures.

The Merino 250 base layer bottoms are just one more of their plethora of products that use this material. They found out what works and stuck with it. They are a great first layer when you are going outside, and it is cold. Do not worry though; they transition well into the warmer weather as the breathability of them will help regulate your body temperate and keep you from overheating.

They are super comfortable; customers love the way they feel against their skin. The biggest problems with them, however, is the high price tag and the inconsistent durability. Some consumers were unhappy with how long the lasted, stating that they started to rip at the seams after on a couple of uses. Overall though they are not a terrible pair of leggings, and most customers who have purchased them fell in love.

They fit you snuggly enough that they fit comfortably under your other active gear without giving you any extra bulk or restricting your movements at all. Materials

Materials

The SmartWool Merino 250s are made out of 100% Merino wool to provide you with great warmth and excellent comfort. This type of yarn comes from Merino sheep and is known for how soft it is as well as the shine and fantastic breathability. The fibers are a little softer, finer, and more sensitive than many other fabrics, giving you a tremendous feeling that you will love. The wool is naturally long so it creates an extremely strong fiber, giving you extreme durability as it will not easily tear. It is also going to be able to keep you exceptionally warm while still providing you with a lightweight feel that will not weight you down.
Protection

Protection

The Merino 250s are the warmest base layer that SmartWool has to date. It is created to keep you warm even on the coldest of days. Yes, you are still going to want to layer when it is colder, as these are generally used as a base layer pair of pants. If it is a little cooler, some customers might choose to wear these as their only pair of pants, but most will just layer them. You will get a decent amount of protection from the elements, keeping you freezing too quickly while you are out exercising and enjoying the outdoors. Do not let the cold weather stop you; let SmartWool keep you protected throughout your adventure.

They are also going to help protect your skin against irritating chafing while you are out and about. The flatlock seam construction is going to minimize the amount of chafing that will occur from your skin rubbing of the seams of the leggings.
Breathability

Breathability

Even though the Merino wool that makes up these pants is designed to keep you warm, it will also do well when you transition into warmer temperatures as well. They are incredibly breathable, allowing air to flow into them with ease, helping regulate your body temperature, so you are not overheating. The ventilation is also going to help keep you dry, as when you sweat there will be a place for that moisture to go. It can escape the leggings and evaporate quickly, eliminating the chances of being stuck in soaking wet pants throughout your workout.
Durability

Durability

For the most part, the leggings are pretty durable, but some customers have had some problems with the longevity of them. A few reviewers mentioned that after wearing them only a couple of time, they started to rip at the seams, mainly in the crotch area, making them unwearable. It can be frustrating buying a product only to have it fall apart shortly after receiving it, and these are no different. They have stated that they feel like they are made out of cheap materials and would not recommend them to anyone.

That being said, there are also many consumers who have not had any problems with the durability of the pants. They are made of Merino wool which consists of durable fibers that are not prone to getting holes and tearing easily. Most customers have had no issues, but it is important to note that there were some who had poor experiences when it came to longevity.
Care

Care

The SmartWool Merino 250 base layer bottoms are machine washable so you can keep them clean and fresh with ease. You can wash them in warm water, but it recommended to run them through on the gentle cycle. You are not going to want to use bleach, however, as that will ruin them. Tumble dry them on low heat. If you need to iron them, although that does not ever seem to be necessary, you can use a cool iron as needed. Finally, if the need arises, they can always be dry cleaned.
Value

Value

The 250s are a bit on the pricey side, with a rather steep price tag, even when compared to similar products. They are definitely on the high end of the spectrum. Since they do not have the best track record when it comes to the durability some consumers do not think that they are worth the cost and would recommend steering clear of these. That being said, if you can get them on sale for a lower price, then you might want to give them a shot. Buying them full price, they stated, is not worth it.
Comfort

Comfort

Most consumers love the comfort level of these pants. They are super flexible and fit like a glove. They are almost like a second skin and do not feel overly bulky when worn under your clothes as a base layer. That being said, a few men mentioned that there is a bit too much material in the crotch, stating that it can bunch up and cause some discomfort, but that is not a common complaint. For the most part, customers love them. The wool is super soft against their skin and creates a pleasant environment inside the pants.

The flatlock seam construction is going to help reduce discomfort in the long run by helping prevent chafing and irritation from your skin rubbing against the seams or your legs rubbing against each other. Of course, this is all dependent on you getting the right size for a snug fit; otherwise, you will not get this wonderful experience.

Whether adventuring in the winter weather or transitioning indoors where it is warmer, these leggings are going to keep you cozy. They are going to ensure you are warm enough when you are outdoors, but the breathability will help regulate your temperature and keep you from overheating when you enter the warmer temperature — keeping you comfy wherever you are.
Size

Size

These bottoms are available in sizes small through extra large, so they can try to accommodate as many body shapes as possible. There are no alternative lengths available, so you are stuck with the regular length pants. They have an inseam of 29 inches (74cm) for the size medium. This measurement will vary depending on size and is only an average.

If you aren't sure as to what size you should order then it is recommended that you look at the sizing chart online to ensure you are getting what you need the first time you order to eliminate the need of a return or exchange.
Fit

Fit

Customers have reported that these leggings are running true to size, so that is going to help ensure that you are getting the correct size the first time for an optimal fit. They are designed to be snug, almost like a second skin, so you can wear them comfortable under some of your other bottoms without being too bulky and restrictive. Make sure that you are not getting them too big, so they are not going to be baggy if they are then you run the risk of chafing and discomfort while wearing them.
Style

Style

As these leggings are designed to be a base layer for your cold weather excursions, they have a plain and simple design. They are generally meant to be worn under your clothes so most people will not see them anyway. There are a few out there who will wear them as a single layer if it is not too cold out, but those consumers are few and far between.

There are only a few colors that you can choose from when ordering. You can pick from black, deep navy, charcoal heather, or olive heather. Some consumers would have liked to have seen some more color options, but that does not seem to be a deal breaker for them.
Features

These leggings are designed to give you a slim fit with a mid-rise with the interlock knit keeping you comfortable all day long. They are made out of 100% Merino wool that will keep you warm even on the coldest of days. They are highly breathable and feels fantastic against your skin. The waistband is also covered in the wool to give you even more comfort while wearing them.

The Merino 250 is SmartWool's warmest base layer they have to date, so you are sure to stay warm no matter what you are doing. Hitting the slopes? Are you playing with the family in the snow? Bottom Line

Bottom Line

If you are looking for a great feeling pair of leggings to wear as a base layer for your cold-weather adventures, then the SmartWool Merino 250s might be the right choice for you. They do have a steep price tag, and a few customers did not have the best of luck when it came to the durability of them, but others customers swore by them and stated that they were well worth the money. They do not have a lot of color options, but as they are meant to be worn as an undergarment, the lack of choices does not seem to be that big of a deal. Overall, they are not a bad pair of pants and would make an excellent choice to start off your winter attire.
