Ever since smartwatches hit the market, they’ve been very popular, and every Tom, Dick, and Harry has decided to come out with their own version. This gives users a wide variety to choose from, but it also makes the decision harder. What is the difference between them all? Which is better than the other?

The Misfit Flash smartwatch has pros and cons, as any do. You can enjoy features such as a step counter, distance tracker, calories burned gauge, a sleep tracker, and assistance with losing weight. There are benefits to keeping track of each of these statistics. It can help you improve your health if you utilize it.

This smartwatch doesn’t have the greatest display and it doesn’t measure your pulse or anything fancy like that. However, it’s perfect if you don’t need the fancy additions. What makes this smartwatch unique is the fact that it doesn’t need to be charged. The included battery is supposed to last up to 6 months, depending on usage.

This smartwatch may be resistant to water, but it is NOT waterproof. I repeat, it is not waterproof. Make sure that you remove your watch before washing dishes, swimming, or showering. The Misfit Flash is compatible with many Apple, Samsung, and Google devices. For the quality of this watch and the limited features, it’s price seems a little steep. When ordered on Amazon, it is not included in “Prime” and doesn’t come with free returns. Make sure you check with the retailer before purchasing something you may need to return.

Material

The materials used in the construction of the Misfit Flash include a plastic that is soft to the touch and polycarbonate. Soft plastics are typically made from vinyl plastic because it’s easy to control how soft or firm the end result is. Polycarbonate is comprised of amorphous thermoplastics created when hydrocarbon fuels are distilled into fractions.

Polycarbonate is naturally transparent, but manufacturers who are experts at their craft are able to make the plastic into colors. Even when colored, light is able to transmit at almost the same capacity of glass. Polycarbonate has premium heat resistance and can easily be integrated into materials used for flame retardant.

Under extreme heat, because they are thermoplastics, polycarbonate does not burn. Instead, it melts (at 155 degrees celsius). This property is helpful when it comes to manipulating the polycarbonate into different shapes and sizes. It even allows the product to be recycled more easily and efficiently. When shaping polycarbonate, it doesn’t need to be hot, either. You can mold it at room temperature. It is easier when hot, but not necessary.

There are a couple of downfalls when it comes to this material. It is easily scratched (though resistant to large impacts). The good news is that you can usually apply a scratch-resistant protective layer onto the material. Also, polycarbonate is toxic when it comes into contact with food. Polycarbonates that are made without BPA (bisphenol A) are safe for food and water.

Display

Most smartwatches on the market have complex display screens. While some may love the large selection of features and statistics and text messages, others are overwhelmed by it. For those looking for a much simpler approach, this watch could be the answer. If you’re looking for a more complex display, there are options.

The display is polycarbonate and is splashproof; meaning that it can withstand being splashed, but not submerged. The watch is made with a seal that is tight enough to keep out water when it comes into contact with it for a short time. However, when submerged or left wet for a long time, the moisture will seep through the cracks.

The time and progress displays are LED lights. LED lights are used for products like this often because of how great they look. They’re not only bright, but the colors are bolder. This is because they increase contrast and enrich colors. LED screens are lighter than LCD screens because they don’t use fluorescent bulbs. That’s good news when you’re going to be wearing it on your wrist all day. LED lights are better at reducing eye fatigue, strain, and headaches.

However, they cause the product they’re incorporated into to be more expensive; which would probably explain the pricing of this watch. If the wrong manufacturer is trusted with the job of making LED lights, they can easily develop defects and deterioration much quicker than they should. LED’s do change color somewhat with age. White LED lights aren’t consistent in appearance because of thermal instability.

Compatibility

The Misfit Flash smartwatch is compatible with most Apple products, including iPhone’s 4s/5/5c/5s/6/6+, iPod touch (5th generation or newer), iPad’s 3/4/Mini/Air (must be using iOS 7.0 or newer), Samsung Galaxy’s s4/s5/s6/Note 3, and Google’s Nexus 4/5/6. It can also be paired with other BLE capable Android devices that have 4.3 software, or newer.

In order to pair your device to your watch, make sure that your Bluetooth is enabled on your phone and you are searching for nearby devices. Make sure that your smartwatch is turned on and ready to pair. Refer to the included directions for further assistance.

Step-Counter

This smartwatch will automatically track your steps, distance traveled, and calories burned. Use your device and another app to keep a record of your exercises so that you can compare your data from day-to-day, week-to-week, month-to-month. With today’s technology and social media, there are things becoming trends every single day. Once one group of people decided to start counting their steps, it created a domino effect. It’s hard to be in a crowd and not find someone who counts their steps and has a daily goal.

Tracking steps is an effective tool to keep you motivated in either a weight loss journey or a journey to become more active and healthy. When you have a count of your steps easily accessible on your wrist, you’re going to pay more attention to what you’re doing in the course of your day. You’re going to look for excuses to get a few more steps in if you commit to the goal.

Fitness goals are easier achieved when you have constant motivation to beat your own scores. But what helps those fitness goals become a reality, even more, is focusing on your form, strengthening your core, and paying attention to the intensity of your workouts to judge whether you need to do something more, or less, intense. If you are going to be on your feet more, you might as well make sure they will stay comfortable. Invest in some good insoles.

Weight Loss

Tracking your steps each day will encourage you to beat how many steps you took the day before. If you’re serious about your goals, you’ll be extra motivated, and you’ll be more likely to stay motivated. Linking the data to fitness apps like MyFitnessPal will only work to further assist you in your goals. But you can’t simply wear the watch and expect miracles to happen.

It is up to you to put in the work, every single day. You also need to understand how to read a step counter and how to set and achieve goals for yourself. It has been shown by studies that a person who walks less than 5000 steps in a day is much more likely to become overweight. Those who walk more than 9000 steps, on the other hand, are more likely to have an average weight.

If you put the watch on for the first time and see that you are not walking nearly as much as you thought, you’ll want to start your goal low. Begin at 4 - 5000 steps. Once you are able to reach that goal comfortably on a regular basis, change your goal to 7000. Each month reevaluate yourself and set a new goal. After a bit of determination and hard work, you can be walking 10000+ steps each day and be on your way to your weight loss goals.

For reference, there are around 5000 steps in 1 mile. Therefore, if you’re walking 4000 steps in a day, you’re walking around 2 miles. If you reach 10000 steps in a day, you’re walking around 5 miles.

Sleep Tracker

Some people can fall asleep the second their head hits the pillow, and stay asleep until their alarm sounds the next morning. Many of us are left to envy those people, though. For those who aren’t so lucky, it can be beneficial to track your sleep patterns so that you can try to pinpoint the root issue and hopefully improve your sleep cycles.

With this watch, you can automatically track your sleep/wake cycles and know when you’re sleeping deeply or shallow. When you learn these statistics, you can research ways to improve your sleep. If you need to keep track of more than your sleep and steps, there are other options.

Battery

The Misfit Flash is unique from other smartwatches in that it doesn’t need to be charged. It has a battery that is replaceable and can last up to 6 months, depending on the usage. There are customers who claim that the battery is junk and doesn’t last nearly as long as promised. It is undetermined whether that is due to poor quality. This smartwatch doesn’t have the capability of being turned off, which could be one thing to blame for the less than perfect battery life.

Water-Resistant

This smartwatch is water-resistant, not to be confused with waterproof. That is a misunderstanding you do not want to make, especially when it comes to expensive technology. Water-resistant means that the product can withstand splashes and light rain. However, you do not want to wear this watch when you are showering, swimming, or doing dishes. It can resist water up to 30 m, but the water will penetrate the watch soon after. If you need a waterproof watch, you can find one here.

Options

Many smartwatches come in basic colors, most often black or white. The Misfit Flash is unique, not only in its display screen but also in the fact that it is offered in fun colors. You have your basic black option that features red LED lights, a pink watch that features white LED lights, a red and grey watch that features a grey wristband and red watch face with white LED lights, and a grey and white watch that features a grey wristband and white face with red LED lights.

With these four choices, surely you can find a color scheme that matches your personality and your clothing style. For a more professional look, go with the black or white watches. For a more fun or sporty look, opt for the pink or red watch. No matter which you choose, you’ll be wearing them in style wherever you go.

Clip

Another feature that sets this smartwatch apart from the rest of them is that you can detach the wristband and attach a clip. Using the clip, you can attach your watch face to your shirt, pants, or shoes. This is great for those with sensitive wrists or those who need to wear long sleeves. Runners also believe it is more accurate to count steps when the pedometer is on their feet, which makes sense.

Consumers have reported that the shoe clip did not easily fall off and did seem to more accurately count steps. Depending on your shoes, you will need to be careful before running too fast. The clip may be more loose or more snug depending on your shoe. You’ll want to be sure that it’s not too loose on your shoe. If you’re going to be running at night, try wearing a light to make yourself more visible.

Verdict

Customers claim that the watch appears much cheaper than it looks in the photos. The LED lights show the time, but it is shown in 5-second intervals only. It is hard to ascertain when it is, for example, 2:52. The watch doesn’t have any GPS features. Some consumers recommend that you wear the watch on your hand that is not dominant. When you pick things up and set them down with your dominant hand, the watch can mistake those movements for walking.

If you have your phone set to airplane mode, the watch won’t track your sleep. That is bothersome and inconvenient to some. It also does not track electrical impulses like other trackers. It simply reads your movements. Customers report that it is hard to change goals and find the data you’re looking for. There isn’t an app to go with the watch that would offer coaching advice like some other watches have.

People have said that they like how comfortable the watch is to wear on the wrist, how convenient it is to clip to their shoes, and that it is a nice, simple, straightforward tracker. However, they wish that there was a setting for alarms. The ultimate decision is up to you.

Bottom Line

Whether you are just curious about your steps, want to track your sleep, are chasing a certain weight loss goal, or want a fancy watch for checking the time, this smartwatch could be what you’re looking for, and more. However, it could also be less than you’re looking for, depending on your intentions. For those simply wanting to track their steps and calories burned, this watch does the job.

However, if you want an accurate sleep tracker, a heart rate monitor, a blood pressure monitor, and a more convenient goal setting, you may need to look elsewhere. This watch comes at a relatively high price for a watch that doesn’t offer many features. The only person who can decide if it’s worth the cost is you.
