Founded in 1916, Keds is one of the older shoemaking companies in the USA.

They were among the first companies to produce canvas shoes with rubber soles. And as an interesting fact, the word sneaker comes directly from their merchandise. The shoes that the company made in the early ’20s were named sneakers because the thin rubber soles made the shoes more muffled. Yup, the people were “sneaking around silently” while wearing the shoes and the name was derived from them.

During the mid-’50s Keds were marketed as athletic performance shoes and the best players in the NBA actually wore them. During the ’50s 60’s and 70’s celebrities like Katharine Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, adored the Keds shoes, and by the early 90’s everybody wore them. In 2016, Keds celebrated its centennial with the „Ladies First Since 1916 campaign“ and the Keds shoes were even mentioned in the Wheatus’s song called Teenage Dirtbag. The girl called Noelle – which was the subject of the song reportedly wore Keds shoes.

But for now lets’ focus on Keds Midtown Suede WX. Hope you’ll like this review.

Outsole

Outsole

The one thing that remains a classic in almost every sneaker is the white rubber outsole. And staying true to the classics is one of the company’s missions. There’s no way that Keds would mess with tradition and everlasting style. So, they found a great way to incorporate the classic white rubber outsole in one fantastic shoe. The rubber is highly flexible, thick, textured and looks fantastic with the upper, regardless of the color. This white rubber not only ads plenty of flexibility to the foot, but it also enhances comfort as well.
Midsole

Midsole

Although it may not seem impressive at first glance, the midsole is highly comfy and practical. Why? Because it contains cushioned Ortholite footbed and frankly it’s pretty damn impressive. How impressive you might ask? Well, for one, the cushioning made with Ortholite technology is long-lasting, which means you’ll be relying on the midsole’s fantastic supportive properties for a long time. Secondly, it’s lightweight, washable, with moisture-wicking properties and eco-friendly. The midsole featured in the Midtown Suede WX provides cushioning and optimum performance without adding additional weight to the shoe.
Upper

Upper

Yes, the outsole and the midsole had a nice selection of materials, but the real star of the Midtown Suede WX shoes by Keds is the upper. There are so many good things to be mentioned about upper, so start paying attention.

First things first, the upper is made entirely out of Scotchgard treated suede. The Scotchgard as a product is mostly used in the production of baby outfits, shoes, and other baby stuff. We all know that babies get dirty really easily. So, Keds have taken pointers from the baby industry on how to make a shoe that stays clean for a long period of time and applied it to the production of their shoes. And Scotchgard is the secret ingredient. Because of the Scotchgard treated suede, the upper (much like the baby’s bibs and overalls) get’s dirty less and the eventual cleaning of the shoes is practically a breeze. Secondly because of that Scotchgard treated suede in the upper, besides stain repellant, the shoes become immediately water repellant too.

So, they’re appropriate to be worn in almost every type of weather, and no amount of rain can damage them, or leave you with a cold because your feet got wet and very cold. The shaft of the Midtown Suede WX measures approximately mid-top from the arch and the shoe has a round toe silhouette. The shoes are with an ankle length proportions, and the tongue (or what would be a tongue if it wasn’t fused with the upper) is strategically placed much higher in the opening of the shoe. The inside of the shoe has a delicate and soft, fabric lining, while the zipper is placed on the side of the bootie.

The collar of the shoe has slight padding for an extra bit of comfort and the front of the upper is scrunched to give the shoe a more urban, unpolished look. Perfect pick for the urban ladies that enjoy little bit edginess in their wardrobe.
Comfort

Comfort

The comfort in the Midtown Suede WX is probably essential and there’s lots of it this particular shoe. This is a flat shoe that not only has a sturdy thick rubber outsole; it also has an Ortholite footbed which provides cushioning and a lot of support to the entire foot. The Ortholite footbed placed in the midsole has been singled out by most of the customer review messages on the company’s official website. The midsole was praised for being extremely helpful in delivering the comfort that’s needed and for the ability to stay in perfect condition even after a prolonged time of wearing the shoes.
Support

Support

Much like with the comfort part of this review, the support is quite high in the Midtown Suede WX shoes by Keds. The ankles have plenty of room to move in the show's opening, and the toes have plenty of room in the upper as well. The opening is wide enough to support pretty any type of calf, adding to the support of the shoes. Oh, and last but not least, the upper going all the way to the ankle adds support to the entire foot. When the toe is secured and the shoe has a nice grip form to bottom, the support is always high. And the Midtown Suede WX is no exception.
Durability

Durability

The shoes being made almost entirely form suede makes them more durable from the get-go. But add to that the fact that that suede is Scotchgard treated suede than you’ll get even more durable shoe that is sure to stand the test of time. The upper and outsole of the shoe are solely glued and no stitching is involved, but the addition of the Scotchgard in the upper ensures the preservation and the maintenance of the shoes against the outside influences. Bad weather, cold, ice and plenty of water got nothing on the shoe performance. They are water and stain-repellant and will remain that for as long as you’ll wear them. So you can rest assure that the durability is guaranteed to remain high even after a prolonged time wearing the shoes.
Flexibility

Flexibility

Yes, flexibility is quite high in these shoes. Why? Because of the soft, flexible rubber in the outsole and the suede upper that despite being Scotchgard treated retains the flexibility in every area of the shoe. The Midtown Suede WX is one of the best picks in terms of the flexibility offered.
Stability

Stability

A flat, round toe ankle length bootie made out of Scotchgard treated suede is an obvious choice for stability, so you’ll be not making a mistake in choosing the WX model. The opening of the shoe is wide enough, and the upper roomy enough to add stability to the shoes without the added worry of your feet being crammed in the shoe or your legs losing circulation. No, every step will remain stable, and that stability will come from the entire shoe.
Airflow

Airflow

Yes, the WX model is made out of suede, and it’s a natural material that allows plenty of airflows. But sadly because this is Scotchgard treated suede, nothing enters the shoes, and nothing exits them. Even air. Because of the Scotchgard used in the upper, the shoes are stain and water repellent, and that severely compromises the airflow in the shoes, that would otherwise be a no-brainer. So, yes. The airflow is not satisfactory in this particular model of Keds shoes, and adding to the fact that these have an ankle length opening, the amount of air that is allowed to circulate in and out of the shoe is slim to none.
Color

Color

Sadly the color palette in the Keds Midtown Suede WX shoes in not grand. Only three colors have been reported to exist (black, grey and cognac) and versatility in the color options is much needed. Also, all of the colors are monochromatic and there’s no distinct mix of color or any other pattern on the shoe’s upper. The black version of the shoe is the most sought after of course, and that’s mostly because black is a neutral color that pairs nicely with just about any other color.
Price

Price

The Keds WX model has a price tag of just 50 dollars. A true bargain for such quality shoe that at the same time is so versatile. Plenty of the customers on the Kedfs’s official website have singled out the model as their go-to shoes in the rainy autumn days. Spring and autumn are seasons dominated by unpredictable weather and rain is sadly part of that. So, thanks to the WX model and the ability to repel moisture, they all remained dry and cold-free.
Brand

Brand

Keds is a shoe band that specializes in the making of canvas shoes with rubber soles. From a novelty in the world of shoemaking, Keds quickly became a trailblazer in providing the public with affordable, durable and comfortable shoes. In the early days of the company, the NBA basketball players wore them in their weekly game, and after getting to the other areas of society pretty much everyone wore them. They were favorites among celebrities, presidents and were featured in your favorite movies like Dirty Dancing.
Style

Style

The WX model by Keds is the perfect specimen of the boot-sneaker hybrid. It lends style and function in equal parts and offers a high dose of comfort, stability and effortless style. Because the shoe lies on the edge of sporty and elegant, it offers endless wearing possibilities on both sides of the spectrum. The shoes can be worn in more sophisticated elegant settings, and in more laid back sporty events. It crosses the line between chick and edgy and delivers a unique look that will make you stand out in a good way. But the versatility is the key factor here. The ankle length of the shoe allows the shoes to be worn with jeans and short skirts. The possibilities are endless, and it’s up to you to find the best outfit.

Bottom line

Aside from the lack of airflow and the lack of color varieties, the Midtown Suede WX model by Keds is a pretty badass shoe. It offers sophistication and laid back chick all in one shoe, and with a sneaker/bootie hybrid that it is, it offers versatility in style and wearing options. Made from a classic white thick rubber in the outsole, reinforced with cushioned Ortholite footbed in the midsole and improved with the Scotchgard treated suede in the upper, the WX model is one hell of a shoe. It not only will make your feet dry, but your feet will also remain warm and well protected.

The stain and moist repelling properties provided by the Scotchgard treated suede allow the shoes to maintain their shape, quality long after you buy them. The fact that no amount of water or dirt can penetrate in the inside part of the shoe will ensure that they remain untouched by the weather conditions. The shoes have an urban chick attitude and they’re best suited for the ladies that have an urban chic attitude in their characters. They’re versatile and affordable and will soon become your go-to shoes. They’re a great purchase.
