A very interesting fact about Franco Sarto is that he started his career in shoe-making, as a cobbler and after gaining the experience and confidence eh then transitioned into the design of the shoes.

That’s right Franco started his apprenticeship at the tender age of 14, and his first job was to hand-last the shoes with a hammer and nails while he sat on a tiny chair. The experience was immense, and after years of training, in 19990 he opened the Franco Sarto shoes. A store that bears his name to this very day.

Born and bred in Venice, Italy, he’s the epitome of what makes a fine Italian craftsmanship. Comfort, great design and even greater materials used in the making of his shoes. But unlike his contemporaries like Jimmy Cho and Manolo Blahnick, Franco Sarto are fantastic and affordable.

You don’t even have to sell you left kidney to buy a pair of his shoes, and you’ll get the same amount of quality, style and comfort as you would with the more popular designers.

But for now, let’s focus on the Franco Sarto Gaetana sandal, and what makes it amazing.

Editor's Pros & Cons
Pros

Leather upper

Slide-on construction with a zipper at the heel

Lined in leather

Lightly cushioned footbed

Flexible synthetic outsole

Cons

No vegan version

Outsole

Outsole

The good old glasses rubber outsole is present in this sandal, and it just works so well. Not only it works well against the trick rich leather in the upper, the ¾ inch heel is the perfect height for this type of style. Anything bigger would have looked ridiculous with the sort of „gladiator-like“style of the upper and the designs would have classed horribly. But the rubber is really something in the outsole. Minimalistic and barely noticeable, the rubber lets you have the best of both worlds. Great support and great feel.
Midsole

Midsole

Synthetic material coats the entire midsole in the Franco Sarto Gaetana and it looks good. However, it not only makes these sandals look good, these feel good as well. And you know why? Because there’s padding underneath that footbed, which only increases the comfort of the sandals in a huge but understated way. The padded midsole really shines through in the moments in which you’ll have to be on your feet for too long, and you’ll be able to feel the difference in the first 15 minutes of walking in these sandals. The padding really makes all the difference, and the synthetic lining in the midsole just helps things to get even more comfortable.
Upper

Upper

Yes, the midsole and outsole were filled with synthetics, but the upper prides itself by having the classic leather. Three is the key number here as each section of the shoe is whapped with three leather straps. Three leather straps hug the toe area of the sandal and in crisscross pattern, three leather straps intersect with each other and hug the foot in a gentle and sophisticated way. There’s no need of an actual strap, since the thin leather straps support the foot with a side on construction. Oh and last but not least, a practical and highly durable sipper sits on the back of the sandal, and makes for one comfortable and easy access. The zipper makes the putting on and taking off of the sandals way easier, especially in the hot summer days when you just feel like spending too much time of complicated shoes. Who needs them? No, short from having a slipper in 90% or your day and night, the Gaetana sandal is the best, stylish and comfortable option that you can have.
Comfort

Comfort

The comfort in the Gaetana sandals comes from several different areas, that feature really is a team effort. Shy? Because you can’t pinpoint and attribute the comfort of the shoe solely on the very log heel or just to the padding in the midsole. Sure, both features are amazing in providing the comfort but there’s no way of knowing who did more of the heavy lifting in this sandal. No, both the padding and the 79’’ heel can safely say that did their absolute best in providing the comfort. And it’s really is a team effort.
Support

Support

Just like in the comfort department, the support comes from all around the shoe, and for good reason. The support is nurtured by the big things like the synthetic outsole and insole, or the leather used in the upper, but also by the little things like the zipper that sits on the back of the sandal. And that’s a good thing. Having a shoe that’s supported by plenty of features. It makes you confident, and proud to have made a purchase that’s both so valuable and high in quality.
Durability

Durability

The leather used in the Gaetana sandal I highly valuable and durable. It will last you for quite some time, and Franco Sarto made sure to use only the best in his shoes. The Gaetana is the perfect specimen of that dedication and the durability will become obvious fairly quickly. Because these are an everyday lifestyle sandals, you’ll be wearing them every day. They’ll become your new favorite shoe for plenty of casual occasions and that’s when you’ll be able to recognize the true value of the durability in the used materials.
Flexibility

Flexibility

The flexibility of the Gaetana sandal is one of its finer points. Because the outsole and padded midsole are made from leather, the flexibility is high in these shoes, and it clearly shows. Yes, the sandals have a lightly padded cushioning in the midsole, and thing outsole with a barely there heel, but they’re very adaptable and extremely flexible for a flat style shoes. The comfort that you’ll feel thanks to the shoe’s flexibility will astonish you, and your feet will be thanking you on the long run.
Stability

Stability

It’s hard to recognize if the leather in the upper makes the Gaetana sandals more stable, the padded midsole or the classic zipper in the back of the shoe. Yes, all three things are very beneficial to the stability portion of the sandal, but the fact that these shoes have a very low heel sure ads to the stability and support. Having a flat heeled shoe will make the stability even greater, and will make your pleasure experience while wearing the shoes unrepeatable. The fact that these sandals are made with the finest Italian craftsmanship sure is an added bonus, but yes, the stability is evident in every single area of the shoe.
Airflow

Airflow

Hellooooo! This is a sandal, which by default makes it one of the more are rated shoes in existence. The open spaces in the shoe allow for the air to be filtrated around the shoe, and to make your shoe experience even greater. But there’s no denying that these are shoes made from leather, and the material itself helps greatly with the wicker properties of the sandal. Don’t you worry? Your feet will be filled with the necessary airflow, during the entire time these shoes are on your feet.
Terrain

Terrain

Because these a low heel shoes, walking in them is certainly much easier, but they’re not meant to be walked on rough terrain. The bottom of the outsole is very flat, and it doesn’t support rough or very slippery surfaces. Also because they’re more open type of shoes, wearing them on dry surfaces would be the best option for you. That way you can ensure their quality and can preserve their longevity.
Traction

Traction

Just look bellow the sandal. The entire outsole is flat without the much needed ridges what would help with the traction. Because any inkling of ridging in the outsole is absent, the traction in unfortunately not provided in these sandals. Which is a shame, because they excel in almost every other way. The traction deficit will makes these sandals highly dangerous to be worn on slippery surfaces, and you do need to be careful.
Style

Style

Franco Sarto’s success came as no surprise to nobody. His exquisite designs feature effortlessly elegant lines and sumptuous leathers, and all of these things combined make the high demand of his shoes. His shoes give away a lot of confidence and ease, and a life well lived for every woman regardless of age, job position or lifestyle. His following took some time to ignite and for his designs to get noticed, but when they did Franco Sarto grew as the brand and was able to satisfy the demands of the savvy, fashionable women everywhere.

But when you look at his designs, you’ll understand why he often mentions in interviews that he designs for the young ladies and their mothers. Because he truly designs both for the young ladies that buy his shoes, and for their mothers, aunts and grandmothers. His design can find their way on to almost every feet, and they’re loved by generations upon generations of ladies all around Europe.
But in the Gaetana’s case, the model will give you a nice gladiator style vibe, but with a lot more comfort. Made from leather and synthetic materials, the Gaetana is fantastic shoe. It can transition easily from being a day shoe to a night shoe, and it’s a nice versatile shoe you must have in your wardrobe. Especially if you chose a sandal with a darker color in the upper. You can wear with just a dark wash jeans when you pick up your kids from school and you can pair it with a flowy summer dress for a cocktails with your girlfriends. The possibilities are endless.

Bottom line

Bottom line

The Gaetana model by Franco Sarto is one fantastic shoe. Affordable, comfortable and versatile. The three key things that everyone is looking for in a shoe. However, there are some aspects of this sandals that leave room for improvement. Let’s start with the synthetic midsole. It would be nice if, like the upper, the midsole was made from real leather. It would have made the comfort even greater. And speaking of the midsole, although it’s lightly padded, it would have been amazing if that padding was more pronounced. Because the sandal is very flat, there’s too much pressure put on the entire foot, and with the right padding the arches of the foot would have been more relaxed. Oh, and last but not least, the zipper that’s on the heel of the sandal, it would have been nicer if it was positioned on the side of the sandal. The heel is a very tender and sensitive place for plenty of the feet and it’s been said that some of the ladies had a bit of a trouble adjusting to the zipper that’s put in the back of the shoe.
But overall, the Gaetana sandal is one amazing shoe. It works well in the wardrobe of the free-spirited ladies who love to feel the breeze beneath their toes, and for the ladies who do love a fashion challenge. Not anyone can pull of a gladiator inspired sandal that’s devoid from any embellishments, but some ladies might find the beauty in the simplicity. Franco Sarto’s shoes are known for their versatility, simplicity and quality and the Gaetana model is no exception. It’s made for the chic ladies of all ages and styles that enjoy a good Italian craftsmanship on their feet. The Gaetana sandal can really spice up any wardrobe, and with a smart pairing can really bring any outfit to life. You won’t regret if you buy it, and it will be in your shoe closet for a very long time.
