FitFlop first hit the scene with awesome sandal options with wedged heels that women loved. They helped to keep the muscles of the leg flexing and in motion while still supporting the foot and promoting a healthy lifestyle. Many of their options were bedazzled and bright, but this is a more relaxed take for the brand. The masculine, but still whimsical, Trailstar Fresh Weave by FitFlop has fantastic footbed comfort and a chill appearance for the hottest months of the year.

Aesthetics

Aesthetics

FitFlop is famous, or infamous, depending on your personal style, for their extremely sparkly and fun sandals. The Trailstar Fresh Weave is something entirely different. These are more appealing to a more “hippie”-style. With an upper that is reminiscent of those traditional woven blankets you find in the south of the US and Mexico, this is a pretty laidback take for a FitFlop sandal. If you really love more casual looks that can blend perfectly with cargo shorts or jeans, the Trailstar Fresh Weave will be a really great pick for you. This construction is extremely similar to a classic Teva. It has an ankle strap and a toe strap, with anchoring straps going around the ankle and across the top of the foot. The look is clean but interesting. It is a functional design but it doesn’t miss the opportunity to add in some unique elements, like the print, that makes it really stand out. Closures on the ankle in a triangular shape give it a sportier flair than just having intersecting straps, while also cutting down on bulk and weight. There is only fabric where you need it for support and comfort, and nothing additional where you don’t.
Airflow

Airflow

Sandals are really in a league of their own when it comes to air flow, but the materials still matter. We have probably all felt the woes of a sandal that is soiled due to unnecessarily stifling fabric. When looking for a warm-weather shoe, we want a fabric that breathes regardless of how little of it there is on our feet. Luckily for us, shoes like this Trailstar Fresh Weave provides just that. Lightweight webbing reigns supreme when it comes to the upper on this option by FitFlop. Webbing means that there is a whole lot of spaces in the fabric’s construction that allow for air and heat to get out of the fabric. That is really crucial when the footwear is made for warmer weather such as this one. Even if you aren’t a huge fan of the style, this utilitarian design can really help elevate your expectations in your sandals. Never feel like you’re being smothered by a summer option ever again!
Durability

Durability

FitFlop ensures every pair of footwear they make stands the test of time. Part of where that starts is the outsole. Outsoles that have superior traction are great for practical reasons, and materials like rubber help improve that. Rubber also helps to improve the durability of the outsole. Since we tend to be more active in warmer weather, a sandal that can hold up to this additional activity seriously benefits from a rubber sole. The Trailstar Fresh Weave realizes this and implements a great outsole for fantastic longevity. An upper with full washability is a great feature of this option by FitFlop. Being able to hold up for longer is generally closely correlated to the ability to maintain material. The super-strong webbed fabric on the top can be cleaned and maintained incredibly easily. This factor is honestly indispensable in a summer shoe that will be getting a lot of wear.
Fit

Fit

When you see a really strappy upper, you generally have to worry about navigating it, including getting it on and off with ease. The Trailstar Fresh Weave by FitFlop has adjustability in all of its straps, save for the one going across the top of the foot diagonally. This makes for not only easy wear but a more customizable fit. Some people may have a slight issue with one factor though. The base of this sandal has a medium to wide fit. If you are someone with a more narrow foot, it might feel a bit weird to wear this pair, even if you fit it snug to the top of your foot with the adjustable straps. Having a base too large for you and a fitting upper can cause a lot of problems. It can affect the way your foot lines up with the base of the shoe. This cuts the amount of support by a lot. There is no way to tell if you will have even half the benefits if it isn’t lining up with the bottom of your foot correctly. Since the base of this FitFlop is anatomical, it is important to have everything hitting exactly where it needs to be. People who have really slim heels or feet, in general, would do better with a brand that doesn’t run on the wider side.
Flexibility

Flexibility

So rarely do we see a sandal that has both flexibility and support, but this is one that exceeds the standard in both departments! The materials used in the Trailstar Fresh Weave are the fabric in the upper, creating a really awesome, flexible sandal that can move with you. Rubber is generally flexible but gets more difficult to move the thicker it gets. Luckily, the outsole of this is rubber for all the benefits it brings, but the midsole and insole are actually far more soft and pliable than hard rubber would be. It really is the perfect blend of materials to make it pliable and great to wear. It will be a total pleasure exploring in these casual sandals by FitFlop. If you are in love with the durability of leather, but tired of it getting brittle and uncomfortable due to exposure to the elements, you will welcome this option. You can get this shoe wet and sandy, and it will still feel amazing, after multiple exposures even! For those who plan on being really active in their Trailstar Fresh Weaves, you can secure them tightly to the foot without them restricting your movement and causing issues while you play.
Midsole

Midsole

Sandals aren’t exactly known for their variety of midsoles. Summer options tend to either be big, bulky, and excessive or so slim they only have an outsole and an upper, clumsily bound together. This FitFlop has a midsole that they call the Anatomicush. You guessed it, it is built to be an anatomic footbed, which dips into the curves of your foot offering support where you need it most. Midsoles are necessary for the all-day comfort we want from our sneakers, but many shoemakers neglect to consider the need for it in a summer sandal. The Anatomicush midsole is so incredibly light and flexible. It doesn’t add bulk and it won’t stiffen the base of the shoe at all. Its sole aim is to make the wearer’s experience in this shoe fantastic without affecting other areas of the style. Their design intends to meet the needs of your foot to the highest degree. If you are an athletic shoe junkie and can’t tolerate the feel of the average sandal, something that works overtime in the comfort department with a phenomenal midsole is just the thing.
Salient Features

Salient Features

There are some truly great features of this Trailstar Fresh Weave, and all of them are incredibly important, however some need to be mentioned in their own special category. You probably aren’t familiar with many sandals that have won awards for their promotion of comfort and foot health, but this FitFlop has done just that. These earned the APMA, the American Podiatric Medical Association, Seal of Acceptance. This award is given to shoes that exemplify the type of footwear necessary for great foot health. One feature that a lot of sandals forget to implement is a drainage system for water. Everyone loves splashing around in the sun either at the pool or beach, but no one enjoys feeling like they’re sliding around on their insoles or itchy in their shoes. This footbed is grooved to allow for water to run off of it and away from the foot. Wet feet are a breeding ground for bacteria, and can cause discomfort for you just by virtue of being wet, bacteria aside. These features just go to show how the creators of this Trailstar Fresh Weave thought of everything when making this sandal.
Support

Support

The support on this Trailstar Fresh Weave is honestly almost unbelievable. As mentioned, they have a special Anatomicush midsole. This is the base in which they build on for such superior support and comfort. In addition to the anatomical midsole, there is fantastic arch support to lift and cradle your arch while wearing. On the heel, a pad is added for extra comfort and cushioning. To have a totally seamless footbed, an additional layer of cushioning for an extra-soft feel on the bottom of the foot is added. This will feel like your favorite memory foam slip on, but it won’t be flat, causing you more pain in the long run. FitFlop made a sandal that would perform as well as a shoe specifically made for support, because it has been, despite its casual and fun design. Anatomical contours ensure that you are making the most contact with the midsole possible while walking. They call this the Trailstar, and that is because it can hold up to hitting the trail or the streets. No matter what your needs are in terms of support, this is a sandal that will defy your expectations completely and totally when it comes to comfort.
Traction

Traction

Obviously, with a name like the Trailstar Fresh Weave, you can also expect some serious traction. The bottom of this shoe has flex lines, which are horizontal cuts that better allow the outsole to function and move cohesively with the rest of the shoe. This doesn’t only improve flexibility overall, but it allows the ground to be gripped more frequently at all of its contact points because it doesn’t lift away any further than the foot does. If you turn this shoe over to look at the bottom, the pattern is reminiscent of tentacles or legos. The traction does an excellent job of gripping surfaces and has so many ridges and multidirectional patterns which create an even better ability to hold onto multiple different surfaces. In addition to the traction pattern and flexibility of the outsole, there are durable, slip-resistant rubber pods at the front and back of the shoe. These create added security when wearing this FitFlop, totally changing the game for traction on sandals in an outstanding way.
Upper

Upper

This sandal is great in so many ways, there is bound to be a problem or two in some area. For the webbed upper, though it is super easy to clean and great for breathability, it may cause discomfort in other ways. Webbing like this can rub and chafe the foot, especially when the foot is perspiring, creating more movement of the straps against the foot. For some, this could definitely have the potential to cause blisters. For others, it may just make it a bit uncomfortable to wear. It depends on your skin's sensitivity, but this kind of material can be problematic for many people. If you have ever owned a similar style with a webbed upper, either by this brand or others, you may know how you react to that kind of material against your skin. If you haven’t had problems with more coarse fabrics in the past, then no worries! If you have sensitive skin or are blister prone, a yoga sandal style made with jersey material may be more fit for your feet.
Bottom Line

Bottom Line

This hiking style sandal by FitFlop hits every major comfort point one could ask for. This summer staple is washable and easy to throw on, with incredible support and traction for even the most adventurous wearer. It is cut a bit wide and may run the risk of chafing the top of your foot, so beware of sizing issues or material sensitivities. Otherwise, if you are looking for a rugged sandal that is as ready for the world as you are, definitely consider this FitFlop Trailstar Fresh Weave!
