Block heels are an elegant reminder of the past that’s been making a comeback for decades. The block (or chunky heels as they’re known) has been a staple on catwalks, on the cover of fashion magazines and every shoemaking company or a retailer has a variety of the block heels in the roster.
But, the thing is before they were a must-have item in every capsule wardrobe, the block heels first were a statement piece. They completed an outfit, they made a statement and they made sure that the lady that was wearing them was noticed. They still do that, but now they’re upgraded and made with the top-notch technology that ensures that aside from looking fabulous, you’ll also feel fabulous.
The Clarks Ellis Tilda is one fine specimen of that block heel trend that keeps of resurrecting from the ashes every season, but this particular model is more suited for wearing in the summer.
More on the Clarks Ellis Tilda details below in the post.
Made with the very familiar and very dependable resin rubber, the outsole’s only flaw is that it’s very thing. Almost too thin for its own good. It’s a flaw in this case because there’s a significant block heel glued at the back of the outsole. Yes, the resin rubber
is quite durable, but the very thin nature makes it flaw in this otherwise great sandal. Standing at 5.5 cm in height, the woodgrain block heel is quite tall, despite being chunky in size, and the toes will have very little support. All the weight of the body will eventually fall on the toes, and that will inevitably put a big strain on the rest of the foot. The Cushion plus technology in the leather footbed helps a bit, but the thin outsole is truly a setback when it comes to the overall quality of the shoes.
The Cushion Plus technology mentioned earlier really shines in the midsole. It’s what makes comfort
even greater in this open toe style sandal. The Cushion Plus technology that’s been featured in the making of the leather sock is just an addition to the great mix of technology and materials that were used in the creation of the shoes. High tech process with high-quality materials, always delivers a high-quality final product.
Probably the most glorious part of the sandals is the upper, and coincidently the most luxurious. Made with a mix of leather and nubuck, the upper is filled with the luxurious feel of real leather. But what is nubuck you might ask? Its top-grain cattle leather, that has been sanded or buffed on the grain side (or outside) and is wear-resistant. It’s more expensive material than suede, and over here it’s been used in the design of the straps in the upper.
in this particular model are made with a distinct crossover style. One thick horizontal strap hugs the toe area, while the other two in a crossover style sit above the solitaire strap. Oh, and one adjustable ankle strap with buckle closure gives the upper the polished, finishing touch. There’s no need for any other embellishment, details or kitschy hardware, as it will ruin the polished smart, sophisticated look that the upper gives to the entire sandal.
There’s so much to be said about a block heel
in terms of the comfort that it provides to the entire shoe. Yes, the Ellis Tilda has a high heel attached to the back of the shoe, but every bit of that chunky heel allows for comfort and pain relief to stay relevant, even after some time spent in these shoes. The comfort is there and coupled with the comfort that the leather sock in the midsole, together they make for one very comfortable shoe. Any little thing helps and having a heel that won’t cause you pain and problems while walking helps quite a lot.
As mentioned earlier, the outsole of the Ellis Tilda is extremely thin, so the support that’s coming from this part of the shoe should be accepted with a great deal of caution. However, a saving grace in the support area is the Cushion Plus technology featured in the making of the leather
sock of the shoe. The cushion plus technology offers the much-needed support, and with that, the shoes instantly become more comfortable, pleasant and a lot less painful.
If there are some flaws to be found in the other sections, there is none to be found in the durability part of the Ellis Tilda model. Why? It’s quite simple actually. This is a perfect specimen of a shoe that’s been made with the highest quality materials and with high attention to detail. The leather is featured both in the upper and in the outsole of the sandal, and that leather is a mix of regular high-grade leather and nubuck
. It’s almost certain that the sandal will last you a while, but the durability factor relies heavily on you and how you take care of the shoes.
Yes, the shoes are made with thick, high-quality materials and there’s a huge amount of durability to them, but the fact that the outsole and midsole are very thin makes them pliable and extremely flexible. The flexibility is evident in the bending of the foot
, and in the way how the footfalls on the cushioned footbed. One can’t forget that the midsole is also reinforced with padding, but that padding is very light, so it doesn’t interfere with the flexibility of the sandal.
Much like in the support section of the shoe, the stability is attributed to the chunky heel that sits at the back of the shoe. It’s 5.5 cm in height, but given the fact that it’s a block type of a heel, the stability of the sandal is amplified with precisely that type of heel. Think about how unstable this shoe would have been if this would have been a thin high heel in the back of the sandal. Very uncomfortable and unstable. And that’s the thing. The addition of the block heel
works perfectly against the thing outsole and the strappy leather upper with an open toe. All the pieces of the mosaic find each other and provide a great amount of stability to the entire shoe.
The official Clarks website states that the fit is true to size. There’s no need to order one size bigger or smaller since the sizing is correct, but on the subject of the fit when the sandal is actually worn, the shoe fits like a glove. Because the sizing is correct and because of the padding in the midsole, the fit is satisfactory without cramping the toes or pinching the feet. You can rest assured that the fit is great and that it will stay that way for a long time to come.
The Ellis Tilda model by Clarks costs 120 dollars. The much higher price tag is understandable since real natural materials were used in the making of the shoes. The use of leather and nubuck in the making of the upper really adds to the overall quality of the shoes and naturally raises the price. But if you decide to splurge and to purchase the sandals, think of them as your investment. The quality materials and the fine craftsmanship that’s been part of the Clarks’s manufacturing can really turn this rather expensive purchase into a valuable investment. You’ll be reaping the benefits of this purchase for years to come and the cost-per-wear price will be minimal.
But if you do decide to buy some of these colors, black is usually purchased for more elegant nighttime wearing of this sandal, and the nude one is more for an informal day look. Both look wonderful and both are purchased equally by the customers, but they are bought for different occasions.
What is to be said about the Ellis Tilda sandal, that isn’t obvious at first glance? The company promotes the sandal as smart and that’s completely true. Their minimalistic décor, clean sophisticated lines and oozing of sheer elegance make them the perfect smart shoe. A shoe that you can wear for your friend’s wedding and to your next meeting at work.
Yes, they have an open toe silhouette, but they’re work-appropriate shoes as well. If there was some other detailing on the upper, they wouldn’t have been but this makes them age and work-appropriate. The straps are with the perfect size and the perfect fit and the very same can be said about the heel. But let’s start from the straps. The positioning of the straps and their size is perfectly proportional to the look and the height of the heel. The strappy leather upper is perfectly tied and secured with a slingback strap at the heel of the shoe, and there’s the adjustable buckle closure to give you the desired security.
The tag line that the company has about these shoes is:
-Embrace elegance with comfort.
And that’s true. That’s Ellis Tilda sandal in a nutshell. The elegance that it exudes from the design is only matched by the comfort that it provides. But there’s so much to be said about the sandals. They’re more on the expensive side, but once you buy it you’ll get your money’s worth in the constant wearing of those shoes. And let’s not forget the compliments that will be headed your way. The crisp, elegant design of the upper, pairs well with the block heel at the bottom of the outsole. Yes, the outsole is quite thin but for a chunky heel, making it any bigger would look ridiculous. However, if there’s a room for improvement, it has to be in the cushioning in the midsole. The Cushion Plus technology with the notorious triple-density OrthoLite footbed works wonders in this sandal, but it would have been nice if there’s more padding done in the midsole. Especially in the toes area. That’s the area that has been left out by the designers, as you can see and it would be nice if the entire footbed was lined with the Cushion plus technology.
But they’re pretty badass as they are right now. You won’t regret buying this sandal. Plenty of customer reviews that were left on the company’s website point out the elegance and the comfort that these shoes were given them in return for the high price tag that they’ve spent on the sandals and you should definitely buy a pair of them. They’re stylish, they’re versatile, they’re comfy and they’ll become a constant in your shoe closet. You’ll find yourself reaching for them all summer long. They’re an amazing pair of sandals. they're versatile, they’re comfy and they’ll become a constant in your shoe closet. You’ll find yourself reaching for them all summer long.
