While the other kids from his neighborhood played baseball and football, Calvin Klein knew from an early age that his life will take a different path. He knew that his job, his passion, and purpose in life will always be fashion. But back in the mid to late 60’s nobody knew just how much he would revolutionize the fashion industry. In an era when the European houses like Chanel and Dior dominated the fashion scene, America was in desperate need of something fresh. Something new. Something different. Something laid back.
Calvin Klein really shook things up. He was singlehandedly responsible for the jeans craze in the early ’70s. But the provocative and very scandalous ads really sold the goods. So, the company showed the world that there’s no such thing as bad publicity.
Today, Calvin Klein is more than just a fashion icon. Today, Calvin Klein is more than a symbol of quality. Calvin Klein is today so steeped into the pop culture that we forget that that cult status was earned with decades of hard work and quality products.
But let’s focus on the Calvin Klein shoe model by the name of Fletcher in this interview. Hope you like it.
Having a standard rubber outsole is so last season. Having a beefy rug outsole that’s so chunky and comfy, it’s a whole different thing. But Calvin Klein is a company that stays clear from mediocrity with clear passion, and the Fletcher model does precisely that. By creating the outsole with a fantastic lug style, Calvin Klein is sending a clear message that no style and theme is off limits. In fact, the more style and design blend the better. Look, the definition of the lug sole is basically a thick rubber sole that has very deep indentations. It’s designed to improve the stability and especially the traction of utility footwear.
They’re most prominent in the work shoes or hiking boots
. But the thing is the Calvin Klein shoe model called Fletcher is neither. It’s a dress driving loafer (according to the official Calvin Klein website) but the lug sole here just looks and feels awesome. It may have the thick, chunky lug outsole of a work boot, but the style and practicality of a great loafer that is sure to impress you with the size and the visuals. The outsole has an elevated heel, and regardless of the color used in the upper, the outsole will always remain black. So, if you decide on having the same model but with a white upper, the outsole will always be black.
Having a lightly cushioned midsole is a great bonus for every shoe, and over here in the Fletcher model, you can definitely feel that bonus. Pardon. The cushioned midsole. It gives the arch the much-needed support, and it works wonders for your calves, your legs, and your overall posture
. The comfort that you’ll be feeling because of the slightly cushioned midsole will not only last all day, it will be constant and oh so welcomed.
How on earth can you improve brush-off box leather? Well, you start with putting it on an easy and versatile slip-on design shoe like the Fletcher. The shoe has a moc toe silhouette reminiscent of the great shoes from the past. The moc toe silhouette is most common in the moccasin style shoes, but like in the outsole’s case, the upper has a nice blend of styles as well.
The stitching in the moc toe is done with a great white, and thick stitching that starts from one side of the shoe’s opening and ends on the other side. A single patch of leather hugs the thin and elegant tongue
of the shoe, while the inside of the upper is nicely finished with an equally thin and soft synthetic lining. The lining as you can imagine will leave your feet in a very comfortable state, and the fact that the lining can help with the moisture-wicking properties just puts bonus points in this shoe’s rating. It’s amazing what a thin synthetic lining can do to a shoe, but the real amazement will come after you put the shoes on.
The comfort in the Calvin
Klein model is a no-brainer. For several reasons really. First, there’s the thick rubber lug outsole that’s slightly elevated. It not only ensures comfort, but it also provides the stability of the shoe. But more on that later in the post. The comfort can also be felt through the slightly padded midsole and the fine brush-off box leather that’s used in the making of the upper. The upper is made entirely out of that brush-off box leather, and thing comfy synthetic lining is lurking underneath it. Every single one of these things is responsible for the comfort of the Fletcher model, and it’s really hard to pinpoint which section of the shoe is better.
Having an elevated thick rubber lug outsole is a true blessing here. Why? Well, for one it’s always nice when the support of the shoe comes from the bottom part of the shoe, and especially when that shoe is a slip-on loafer
. But you just can’t simply attribute the support solely to the outsole, now can you. The cushioning in the midsole although isn’t excessive is a much-needed addition to the support portion of this review, and believe us you’ll be able to feel it. Paired with the doings of the rubber outsole, the slightly cushioned midsole and the outsole make a great team here in this shoe.
OK, what’s the first than you think of when searching for a durable, long lasting shoe? The materials from which it was made and of course, how it was made. Well, thankfully you’re in luck. Calvin Klein doesn’t skimp on anything and certainly not on the materials used in the making of the Fletcher model. The Fletcher is a perfect unity of brush-off box leather, buff rubber, and soft synthetic
A winning trio that’s responsible for delivering a fantastic and durable shoe. But having great materials to work with is only part of the challenge. Using them in making a fantastic final product is something else. And to witness the fine craftsmanship of the Fletcher you’ll have to turn your attention to the fine stitching that’s done on several parts of the shoe. And not only it’s done on several key areas, but it’s also done with different stitching patterns and multiple threads that differ in size and color. A fine example of fine craftsmanship don’t you think?
Sadly having the aforementioned materials, properties and dimensions mean that the Fletcher loafer by Calvin Klein isn’t one of the most flexible shoes on the market. Several factors are responsible for the lack of flexibility, but just by looking at the shoe, the upper and outsole first come to mind.
Just look at them.
The outsole is made from chunky lug rubber
, while the thick, robust and sturdy brush-off box leather makes the upper of the shoe. Not exactly the finest examples in demonstrating the flexibility you’ll have to admit. But, it’s true. The use of sturdy materials like real leather and real rubber does have an impact on the shoe’s flexibility and the Fletcher model is entirely made out of them. There’s no visible presence of any perforations, of any mesh or of any strips that could signal easement in the stiffness of the shoe, and that’s why the flexibility of the Fletcher isn’t satisfactory.
That thick rubber really works wonders here. The stability of the Fletcher model is on point here thanks to the fantastically elevated rubber outsole. It’s chunky, it has a heel and it’s all black. What more do you need? Oh, and it’s lug in style, which means that because of the deeper indentations in the rubber, your feet will become more stable on the otherwise unstable surface. But again… More on that later.
Told ya. Those fantastic, deep indentations that have been carved in the thick rubber outsole will not only keep your feet less dirty (the indentations will be pulling the dirt away from the shoes) but they’ll also be responsible for the traction of the shoes. The deeper and greater the indentations the better the traction. It’s that simple. So, although this is a loafer, what you’ll get out of this fantastic outsole is stability that’s mostly found in great hiking shoes. So, count your blessings here, because this outsole will allow you to walk on just about any surface that you can think of.
The Fletcher shoe by Calvin Kline is a loafer style of a shoe. Which means the shoe has a lacing system and a low cut opening that leaves a lot of skin exposed. But other than that, there’s no other source of ventilation in the model. There are no perforations, there’s no visible mesh or any other source of ventilation. The airflow is present because of the use of natural rubber in the making of the upper, but besides the brush-off box leather, the shoes (and your feet) won’t get a chance to breathe.
For a great shoe like this, the Calvin Klein's Fletcher sadly comes in 3 different color varieties. Which is a crying shame, because this shoe deserves a lot more color options. The classic black, the classic white and the blue/grey mix that seems to be one the least demanded. The black upper is the best-seller version of this model, and the white is in the second place, right after the awesome black version.
The Calvin Klein's Fletcher price tag reads 15 dollars. A hefty price for a shoe, but if you decide to splurge, what you’ll be getting with the loafers is a fine quality shoe that is actually made by high-quality materials. Mixed with Calvin Kline’s final stamp of approval, the price is well justified. Why? Because not only they’ll last you for a quite some time, you’ll be mixing and matching the shoes on every given occasion. You won’t be taking the shoes off your feet.
The Calvin Klein's Fletcher is a shoe that sits on the middle of several different styles. The rubber lug outsole is so beefy and thick it’s reminiscent of a work shoe, while the brush-off box leather used in the design of a moc toe silhouette brings a classic nod to the past. The classic slip-on loafer now gets a modern update and it’s an update that you’ll love. Although it may seem suitable for more elegant occasions, you’ll find that the Fletcher model is so versatile and flexible in the style that will make the worn down jeans look amazing.
Although hardly flawless, the Calvin Klein's Fletcher shoe is a modern version of the classic loafer that we all know and love dearly. Modern yet, simple and understated, the Fletcher is a nice reminder of the minimalism that’s been part of the Calvin Klein ethos for more than 5 decades. Why ruin something by making it more complicated when you can improve something by making it simpler.
The easy slip-on design, the brush-off box leather upper and the thick rubber outsole somehow make sense and together they create a minimalistic, comfy yet beautiful shoe that has the potential to become your favorite shoe. Yes, it’s pricey, but every good shoe is. However if you chose to splurge and actually buy it, you’ll get a great mix of high-quality materials and great craftsmanship all rolled into one shoe. A shoe that is sure to stand the test of time.
