Calvin Klein and his childhood friend turned business partner Barry K. Schwartz founded the Calvin Klein company in 1968. Looking back at that particular year, a lot of things happened. You know, besides the inception of the iconic American brand.

The Vietnam War was still raging and showed no signs of slowing down. The cult classic 2001: A Space Odyssey premiered in Washington DC. NASA launched the Apollo 7 program. Richard Nixon was elected President of USA. In a decade in which the mini-skirt and the go-go boots ruled, Calvin Klein dared to be different.

And it paid off. All the time spent in his grandmother’s tailoring shop really influenced young Calvin. And by his own admission, he knew that a future in fashion in his future. His grandma blazed a trail for the impressionable young man, and the rest is history. The early influences, such as the clean elegant lines, the minimalism, and the pragmatism are evident in almost every Calvin Klein item. However, they’re most evident in the Calvin Klein Craig loafer. One of the finest examples of Calvin Klein’s minimalism and simplicity.

The Calvin Klein Craig loafer is the subject of this review. Hope you’ll love it.

Editor's Pros & Cons
Pros

Genuine calf leather in the upper

Round apron toe

Leather-lined insole

Slip-on loafer construction

Cons

Leather feels stiff

Outsole

Outsole

Having a synthetic outsole may look like a drawback for some, but the Craig model actually works better with the man-made outsole. Why? Because unlike the natural rubber, the synthetic soles have a higher elasticity, they’re way more durable and they also have the best shock-absorbing properties. And although they’re used in the making of highly durable shoes like hiking and work shoes, any shoe would benefit from having a man-made sole. Even a dress casual loafer from Calvin Klein. The outsole of the Craig model has a thin outsole, and slightly elevated heel sitting in the back of the shoe.

The Calvin Klein logo is imprinted in the sole with big bold font, and if there’s one thing that could qualify as a flaw here is the lack of ridging in the sole. The bottom of the outsole is flat and has no cutouts/indentations that could improve the traction properties, which could make this shoe slightly dangerous for walking on slippery and smooth surfaces. On and last but not least, the color of the outsole will stay the same with every upper that you’ll pick. If you decide on purchasing a shoe that has white or grass green color, for instance, the color of the outsole will remain unchanged. It will remain black.
Midsole

Midsole

A loafer that has both padded footbed and soft leather sock lining is a true sign of comfort, and Calvin Klein’s shoes are all about that. The first thing that you’ll notice when looking at the midsole is the traditional logo that’s imprinted on the footbed. The color of the footbed is always black, and the logo is made with contrasting white big capital letters. Just so you don’t forget that it’s CK that you’re wearing. The soft leather sock lining pairs well with the soft buttery touch of the upper, and both of them offer the best comfort that you can possibly have.
Upper

Upper

You’ll be pleasantly impressed by the clean, simple lines that grace the upper, and the elegant minimalism that goes with them. Seriously. The upper is a sight for sore eyes, and you have any appreciation for the Calvin Klein’s fine craftsmanship you’ll definitely appreciate these shoes. Made entirely from genuine calf leather, the upper is smooth, elegant and gorgeous.

A round toe silhouette the Craig model is a loafer with a character that you’ll want to have by your side at all times. It has an easy slip-on construction and just one simple ornament at the tongue of the shoe. A thin metal strip-like ornament graces the upper, and again you can clearly see the Calvin Klein logo on it as well. The metal ornament doesn’t feel heavy on the legs, and it completes the overall look of the shoe. Think of what the shoe would look like without it. It would be bare and lackluster, and it’s quite fascinating what a simple metal strip can do to a shoe.

And it would be ludicrous if we don’t mention the topstitching thread used in the completion of the upper. But what is topstitching thread you might ask? Well, this particular thread is slightly thicker than normal sewing thread and it gives definition to areas that are in need of accentuation. It’s the secret weapon in the making of the loafer and you’ll love the attention to detail that was put in the making of the upper.
Comfort

Comfort

The slip-on construction and the fantastic padded footbed make all the difference in the Craig loafer by Calvin Klein. The padding in the midsole and the easement of walking in the shoe really bring comfort to a whole another level. But the Craig wouldn’t be able to call itself a great shoe if it wasn’t for that fantastic upper. Made out of genuine calf leather and with round apron toe silhouette, the upper has plenty of room. The toes are able to move freely and you’ll love the soft buttery touch of the leather sock lining.
Support

Support

The padding in the sock liner may seem insignificant in delivering the support but it’s actually one of the most important features in the Craig loafer. Why? Because the outsole is synthetic ergo a lot softer, more flexible outsole than the regular rubber ones, the padding in the midsole really lands a helping hand in delivering the support. The padding’s first line of defense will be your arches and then the support would transfer on to the rest of the toes. You’ll enjoy this padding very much.
Durability

Durability

When it comes to the durability of Craig loafer, the world flawless first comes to mind. And it truly is. The materials used in the making of the shoe are all high quality, but those alone are not enough in ensuring durability. The making of the shoe is also very important, and some of the process you can see for yourself. You don’t have to be an expert to recognize and appreciate the fine is topstitching thread used in the upper.

It’s made with highly durable and very firm thick stitching, and you can be rest assured that the stitching is going to the be the best asset in the longevity portion of this review. Think about it. If any item (a shoe, a dress or a purse) is stitched properly and with the right thread it genuinely prolongs the life span of that item. But add to that the fact that the shoes have genuine calf leather in the upper, real leather in the midsole and man-made synthetic outsole really proved the point of the durability.
Flexibility

Flexibility

Normally when a shoe is made out of thick genuine calf leather and has padding in the footbed, the flexibility drops significantly. But not here in the Craig loafer. The man-made synthetic outsole is highly more flexible than the rubber version, and you can feel the flexibility of the outsole with the first couple of steps. And let’s not forget that this is a slip-on shoe after all. Meaning it’s not restricted by any lacing system in the opening, so the flexibility is there from the get-go.
Stability

Stability

The man-made synthetic outsole helps matters much in the stability, but it would have been nice if that outsole was reinforced with much deeper indentations. The outsole is smooth and basically, there’s not traction, but the stability thankfully comes from the perfect upper made out of genuine calf leather. The fact that the stability of the loafer comes from the top and the bottom of the shoe really amps up the overall quality of the shoe.
Airtflow

Airtflow

Having calf leather in the upper’s surface is probably the best possible option for the airflow of the Craig Sandal. The leather allows the airflow and the moisture wicking properties in a natural way, but since there isn’t any other source of airflow in the upper, the shoe has to rely solely on the leather. The upper doesn’t have any cutouts, any perforations or any other way that could ensure more aeration in and out of the shoe.
Traction

Traction

As mentioned earlier, the shoe’s outsole is flat and lacks any indentations. The ridges on the outsole are always needed to ensure that the traction is present, and this particular outsole would cause a lot of trouble for you. You’ll have to be careful about the terrain that you’re walking on, as you could slip and fall on smoothed, slippery and wet surfaces.
Color

Color

There are 3 different color varieties of the Calvin Klein Craig loafer. It comes with the always elegant and highly demanded black, dark navy color, grass green, off white color. As you can imagine, the navy and black are the most sought after color variations, but the upper that features off white and grass green are also bought by the adventurous and bold men what love to spice things up in their shoe closet.
Price

Price

The price for the Calvin Klein Craig loafer can reach all the way up to 130 dollars, but the high price tag shouldn’t scare you off in buying the shoes. Calvin Klein ensures that the loafers were made with high-quality materials, and the craftsmanship is admirable as well. They say you get what you pay for, and in this case, what you’ll get for the 130 dollars that you’ll pay, is a great shoe that will sure to impress you and everyone around you. Think of this purchase as an investment for your future. You’ll have a great pair of shoes that will last you for a long time, and you really can’t put a price on that.
Style

Style

The Calvin Klein Craig loafer has impressive wear inspired style that’s so versatile and amazing that you’ll be reaching out for this shoe non-stop. The official Calvin Klein website describes the Calvin Klein Craig as a driving shoe, and there’s so much to be said about the style and influence. First of all, they’re the sporty more casual older cousin of the loafer, and they were invented for…

Yup, you’ve guessed it… For driving. Back in the early ’60s, the drivers were complaining about the heavy and uncomfortable shoes they were wearing, and how they would interfere with the driving. So, a solution was found, and since then, Calvin Klein has found a way to improve this particular shoe with a dash of style and practicality.
The Calvin Klein Craig loafer is a great shoe for any type of moderately dressed up occasion, and for a more relaxed occasion that requires omitting of socks. Yes, one of the rules of wearing the loafers is no socks.
Bottom line

Bottom line

Any shoe that has genuine calf leather, soft leather lining, and the synthetic outsole is a great shoe. But any shoe that has topstitching thread that holds those things together is even better. There’s something to be said about a slip on shoe that’s comfortable and durable, and that thing is quality. Real genuine quality. You’ll be impressed with the overall quality of the shoes and the fact that Calvin Klein brand stands behind it. These are shoes that are made to stand the test of time and will make sure to become your finest asset in your shoe closet. They’re a great a purchase, even with the price tag of 130 dollars, but you’ll be impressed with the stability, flexibility, and durability that would make this price justified.
