According to Vogue magazine, Alexander Wang’s eponymous label embodies a cool, utilitarian-chic, downtown style that is favored by both critics and models alike. He’s been a fashion industry darling for almost a decade now, and a true favorite among the celebrities and fashion magazines alike. Known for his urban designs and heavy use of the black color in his designs, Alexander Wang’s transferred all of his love and talent to a new endeavor. Sportswear.

So when at the end of last year, that cool utilitarian chic merged with one of the greatest footwear companies in the world, the Adidas Originals collection was born.

The Puff Trainer shoes are just one of the seven separate pairs of trainers from the Originals collection. Made with collaboration with Alexander Wang, the Adidas sneakers are unique, eclectic, bold and full of style, kind of like the man behind them. Alexander Wang’s designs have that urban and yet avant-garde style and attention to detail that just needed to be transferred to a crisp and quality product like Adidas footwear.

The Alexander Wang and Adidas collaboration are one of a kind, limited edition partnership. It produced the most unique pairs, but for now, let’s focus on the Adidas Originals by AW Puff Trainer shoes.

Outsole

Outsole

Just like the sneaker itself, the outsole of the Adidas Originals by AW Puff Trainer is massive and in your face. Made from rubber, the outsole is mix of colors and designs. White is the dominant color in the outsole, then light brown and then black, accented more on the area around the toes. And speaking of those designs you’ll find scalloped edges, both wavy and sharp ridges and its eclectic as you can imagine. You’ll be reading thaw word a lot during this review, but it’s the truth. The outsole of the Adidas Originals by AW Puff Trainer is busy, massive but so is the entire shoe, and the outsole is just an extension of that shoe.
Midsole

Midsole

While the entire shoe might seem busy, the midsole is one of the most clear and precise parts of the Adidas Originals by AW Puff Trainers. Why? Because that part is entirely Adidas creation and it’s made from the company’s best asset since 2012. Their well-known and renowned Boost midsole technology. Let’s break it down. First things first, the running shoe technology is not particular developed by Adidas, but by a chemical company called Badische Anilin And Soda Fabrik. Or BASF in short. Secondly, Adidas bought the rights to the technology and applied it to their sneakers with great success. So, what was originally tiny white particles of material - called white capsules, was later welded and combined into one solid piece of midsole and that’s basically the technology that’s today known as Boost. The AW Puff Trainer Shoes has that Boost technology and what it does, is essentially allows that boost or jump of your feet to happen. Your feet get great amortization and that reflects to the rest of your body. Ever since 2012, the Boost technology has been the ace in the sleeve of Adidas and it showed.
Upper

Upper

There’s a lot going on in the upper of Adidas Originals by AW Puff Trainer Shoes. And it’s precisely that busy style makes this sneaker probably one of the most interesting in the entire Originals collection. Where to begin? Let’s start from the top. If you take a good and close look at the shoe, you’ll probably notice the slip-on construction of the sneaker. The tongue of the shoe is removed and replaced with a sock-like opening (or collar) that has the designer’s name on it. The slip-on construction makes it more practical to put on and remove, and it’s the only sneaker in the collection with above the ankle sock design in the opening. Slip-on opening provides easy access but at the same time is very comfortable and doesn’t restricts the airflow to the foot.

The thick back laces are designed with a Bungee closure pattern and they tie at the very back of the sneaker- just above the heel. The tying of the laces is done with a plastic clip but the construction of the upper is the most interesting part of the shoe. The shoelaces are just the details, but the upper is the main star here. Would you look at it? Just like in the rubber outsole’s case the upper is constructed from three different materials and several different colors. The puffer textile upper dominates the sneaker, but the suede overlays have a supporting but at the same time decorative role. If you take a closer look, you’ll notice that the shoes are tied where that suede overlay is positioned. The puffer textile exterior is reminiscent of a skiing shoes of puff jackets, and that’s what it gives its unique look. They’re made for the bold fearless urban men.

The Adidas Originals by AW Puff Trainer is the only one in the entire collection that has this type of design. Yes, it’s the only one that has a full sock like opening, a full puffer upper and entirely slip-on design. No other shoe in the Originals collection is even remotely similar to the Adidas Originals by AW Puff Trainer, and these sneakers take pride in that fact. They’re unique and they know it. They own that style like no other pair in the collection.
Comfort

Comfort

If you take away the massive construction of the Adidas Originals by AW Puff Trainer Shoes, what you’ll be left is one very comfortable. Yes, the outsole may look massive, and the upper even more so, but it’s all down to the materials and not the design. The puffer exterior used in the making of the shoe gives away the illusion that they’re bigger and heavier than they seem. But it’s not the case. The Adidas Originals by AW Puff Trainer Shoes are the comfortable twist on a modern design.
Support

Support

You know the saying fits like a glove? Well, that’s the most literal feeling of the shoe, mostly because of the sock-like collar of the sneaker. The support of the Adidas Originals by AW Puff Trainers is imminent form the moment you put it on. The sneakers hug the feet, and the puffer exterior protects them even more.
Durability

Durability

Because the upper is made from a puffer synthetic and suede exterior, they’re not the most durable shoes in the collection, but the outsole sure is. The massive rubber outsole gives the necessary insulation, while the puffy upper helps the feet to stay warm even in harsh conditions. Imagine that you have a big puffy jacket on you, but that jacket is on your feet. The material of the Adidas Originals by AW Puff Trainer being synthetic will definitely tear more easily than with the sneakers that were made a leather upper.
Flexibility

Flexibility

Flexibility is one of the key factors when dealing with tired feet, and the lack of flexibility in the sneakers is the major culprit for it. Adidas Originals by AW Puff Trainer Shoes doesn’t have that problem. Flexibility is one of the shoes major virtues and it’s all thanks to the very flexible puffer synthetic upper. Starting with the sock like opening, then with the puffer textile upper and relaxed Bungee closure of the laces, there’s flexibility in those 3 key components. Bending and twisting of the shoes is made even easier, and that’s the only pair of sneakers in the entire Originals collection that has all of that. Practically is the most flexible sneaker in the entire collection.
Stability

Stability

Adidas Originals by AW Puff Trainer is not the most stable sneaker in the collection but it’s known to have a narrow fit and it does hugs the foot. However thanks to the sock like opening and the puffer upper, the shoe doesn’t have the same fit as a leather type of shoe would have, and it doesn’t grabs the foot from all sides.
Airflow

Airflow

The massive puffer upper of the Adidas Originals by AW Puff Trainer actually allows airflow, and it does help with the regulation of the temperature of the feet. Because the feet are not restricted in thick and rigid material, the upper, regardless how puffy it is, it actually helps with the air filtration and moisture retention.
Terrain

Terrain

The Adidas Originals by AW Puff Trainer can be worn on flat and rocky terrain. Their thick rubbery outsole will protect your foot on any type of terrain, but they’re best suited to be worn on dry surfaces. The synthetic puffy material of the upper will damage fairly quickly if exposed to harsh conditions.
Traction

Traction

You don’t really have to worry about slipping while wearing the Adidas Originals by AW Puff Trainers. The massive, durable and very thick outsole is enough alone to protect you, but those ridges on the bottom of the outsole really help with the traction as well. Feel free to play a game of basketball (or two) in these sneakers, and you’ll feel the traction properties of that thick rubber outsole.
Style

Style

They’re certainly one of a kind, and probably most interesting pair in the Originals collection. The Adidas Originals by AW Puff Trainers are reminiscent of a skiing shoes or an astronaut shoes but with an urban, and modern flair and modern materials. The sock-like opening and the massive puffer upper are the key elements in this shoe, and frankly the first what your eyes focus on while you’re looking at them. And they were designed by Alexander Wang to be a statement piece of clothing. The perfect massive accessory that blends the trail and outdoor design cues with modern and unexpected elements. They represent the essence of Alexander Wang’s designs. Just like the designer himself, the sneakers are unique, eclectic, and they catch the eye immediately with the mix of textures, colors, and patterns.

Bottom line

Bottom line

Every single shoe of the Originals collection is precisely that. Original, unique and one of a kind. Designed with the effortless and understated talent of Alexander Wang and the very useful technology of Adidas’s ingenuity, the Adidas Originals by AW Puff Trainers are just a fraction of that creativity. With the bold, and in your face design, it’s hard not to notice the sneakers. The same can be said about the rest of the Alexander Wang’s designs but The Adidas Originals by AW Puff Trainers are something else. They’re the wild lovechild. They’re the unique product that resulted from the marriage between Wang and the German footwear manufacturer. A match made in fashion heaven that delivered 6 other similar stylish products. The Adidas Originals by AW Puff Trainers is probably one of the wildest but also the coolest. There are plenty of things to pick and choose from The Adidas Originals by AW Puff Trainers. The Boost technology is there to make the walking in the sneakers a little bit easier, but the sock-like opening and the puffer upper help in terms of flexibility and comfort. Despite the massive construction in the upper, The Adidas Originals by AW Puff Trainers actually hug the feet and add the much-needed stability and comfort.
