Lijiang, Yunnan, China

Part of the Tiger Leaping Gorge to Lugu Lake trek. Notes: - Supplies available along the route - Little traffic but enough for you to flag down a van to complete your trip if you get lost - There are many side routes so a guide is advisable - Especially across the pass there is some thick gorse - the route on this side of the pass i.e. km14 - km18.3 is estimated from routes I saw - Another potential route appears to exist east of the trail km15 - km18.3 Directions: - Continue walking down the road on which you arrived the previous day, through Changsong village - Follow the main road for 10.4km to Baoshan town where supplies are available - After a further 2.4km the road turns sharp 90 o to the right. At this point go up the valley N/NNE. If you have reached a 180 o bend you have gone too far - turn around to the previous 90 o bend - Continue heading NNE for 1.2km aiming for a pass between tree line and rice fields - Through the pass (km14.2) on the road, take the first path down to the right - After 300m when you meet the road again head left for a few metres before continuing straight down a path (right off the road) - At no point should you be travelling W of NNW and should continue to turn gradually towards north - Go across the next road (km15.5) and continue along the path on the other side - At the next road (km16.6) turn right along the road, after 500m you will pass through a small village - After the village you will see the road below you - cut the corners if you can, otherwise simply follow the main road round - At the end of the road (km18.3) there will be a number of porters offering to take your luggage down the hill to Shitoucheng - After passing through the first part of the town you will go up a small rampart into the main stone town - Through the gate, follow the path round to the right: The Mu Family Guesthouse will be on your left and another Guesthouse with ensuite rooms is available at the main town shop a little further down the hill

Yunnan: Daju to Changsong

Deqen, Yunnan, China

Part of the route linking Tiger Leaping Gorge to Lugu Lake. Variation versus my actual route: - Km1.2 - km6 is estimated - Due to inferior satellite imagery available at the time of my trek I was under the belief that the hill just NE of Daju ended in a plateau - My route took me straight up the hill at km1.2 and along the ridge heading SE on the SW side of the small valley whereas I would recommend trying the NE side as shown km3 - km6 - It is not advisable to walk east directly up the hill at km1.2 due to very loose scree with only prickly bushes to grasp. Once at the top there is thick gorse in places Notes: - No supply shops found enroute, however, village at 8.3km has a school and supplies potentially available in the main part of the village below the trail - Friendly beckoning farmer with large farmhouse just after km16 - Expect for these settlements there is very little sign of life along the route - The total height gain is close to 2,000m/6,500ft Directions: - From the first signs of the village (km8.2) keep left following the road NE ignoring any roads down to your right - The road gradually zigzags towards north and 2.3km after the village (45/50 mins) swings east around the head of a valley (km10.5) - After travelling generally east for 1km, the road again swings generally towards north (km11.5) for another 1km and then east (km12.5) - 4.9km from the village, on the second sharp NE to to S bend, instead of following the road head straight NNE as if the bend had not been there (km13.1) - Over the following 1km gradually swing east so that after 500m you are travelling ENE and clip the road (km13.6) as you take off the corner - When you meet the road again (km14), now 5.8km from the village turn right to head E. In 400m at the end of the clearing on your right the road turns N to head 75 o , however, take the wide path at 60 o - After 1km you will clip the road again (km15.3). Keep straight rather than following the road - After 600m when you reach a clearing head back towards the road to your right and follow it (km16) - You will pass a farm on your right and after 2.3km will reach a main road (km18.3) - Turn left on main road and after a few humdred metres drop down into valley on the right hand side of the road - The deepest part of the valley leads to the entrance to a gorge - Follow the gorge to its end (c1.5km) and turn left on the road (km20.4) - After 1km on the road you will reach a small shop which may be able to arrange accommodation - The main part of the village of Changsong is a further 1km down the road
