June 2009

Summer is finally upon us, which also means a plethora of cycling and running events to take part in! The Tour de France takes place through most of the month, and the San Francisco Marathon is at the end. While preparing for his trip to San Francisco for the Apple conference, Adam added terrain views to maps. Briana finished her first 10k and is looking for more advice. Many bugs have been fixed on WalkJogRun.net and with the iPhone application.

Adam Interviewed on Better.tv!

Adam on Better.tv

Last week, our very own Adam Howitt was interviewed for Better.tv, and it's airing today! Check your local listings, or watch it online.

We're extremely proud and think he did a great job, but we're a little biased. :-)

Tour de France

Le Tour de FranceThe 96th Tour de France runs from Saturday, July 4th to Sunday, July 26th 2009. The route will cover a distance of 3,500 km (about 2,235 miles), and consists of 21 stages. These 21 stages are broken down into:

  • 10 flat stages
  • 7 mountain stages
  • 1 medium mountain stage
  • 2 individual time-trial stages
  • 1 team time-trial stage

Speaking of long bike rides, one of our users in the UK has mapped a 100-mile route using WalkJogRun! The route maps the Norwich 100/50 Bike Ride to benefit the British Heart Foundation.

American Independence Day

There are many Firecracker 10k and 5k races happening on July 4th. Which festive races are you doing? Feel free to send your stories over for next month’s newsletter.

Because there are so many races occurring this day, it’s hard to choose ones to spotlight! So, for Chicagoans, I’ve picked some 10k and 5k routes that I like to run, and one of which I’ll run in place of a race:

San Francisco Marathon

The San Francisco MarathonThis month’s featured race is the San Francisco Marathon, which takes place on Sunday, July 26th 2009. Check out the course here. This Boston qualifier runs through San Francisco’s scenic landmarks, including Golden Gate Park, Fisherman’s Wharf, and past AT&T Park.

There’s also two half-marathons; the first will run the same first half of the full marathon, which includes a run over the Golden Gate Bridge, and the second is flatter with a scenic run through the neighborhoods of San Francisco.

Adam recently went to the Apple convention in San Francisco, and while he was there, he remained on his marathon-training schedule with routes from WalkJogRun, of course. Here’s one of his five-mile runs he did in between attending all of Apple’s activities. Thank you to the San Francisco users who gave him suggestions on where would be best to run!

Also while planning his trip to San Francisco, Adam realized that a terrain view would be beneficial in previewing routes. Thus, WJR now has a “terrain view”!

Briana’s First 10K- Lincoln Park Zoo United Run for the Zoo

United - Run for the ZooWell, once again it was a rainy race day. This time it was humid rather than cold! I ran the Lincoln Park Zoo United Run for the Zoo race on Sunday, June 7th in Chicago, Illinois. Besides crossing the finish line, the highlight of the day was getting offered a ride to the race in a cop car!

The route was a scenic route along the lake and through the zoo. It was uplifting to see the bright flamingos in the dreary weather! I was proud with my finish of 57:09. Next up is my half-marathon in August. I’d like to say thank you to the readers who emailed me tips on training for my first half-marathon. Feel free to continue sending me tips on how to prepare!
