July 2009

It’s marathon season! Here in the WalkJogRun office we have a couple people training for upcoming races. Adam is doing the Chicago Marathon and Briana is doing her first half- marathon. Just in time for marathon season is National Foot Health Month. Read on for tips on keeping your feet healthy. This month’s featured races are the Extraterrestrial Full Moon Midnight Marathon and the Inaugural Madison, Wisconsin Mini-Marathon.

In WalkJogRun site news we added a new feature to our maps - you can now share maps with friends. This brings us to another contest! Enter to win a Garmin 305 watch. Details are below.

Race of the Month: The Extraterrestrial Full Moon Midnight Marathon, Half Marathon & 10K

Does running a marathon at night in Area 51 sound kind of cool? We think so! Taking place August 8-9 in Rachel, Nevada, the Extraterrestrial Full Moon Midnight Marathon, Half Marathon and 10K will surely be an event people will want to hear about.

We know what you’re thinking- run a marathon in August in Nevada of all places? Well, Rachel, Nevada is on average 15 degrees cooler than the valley, and furthermore, it’s at midnight. This brings the average temperature into the 60’s F. Not bad! If you’re running it, feel free to let us know how it went and to share photos.

Bonus Race of the Month: The Inaugural Madison, Wisconsin Mini Marathon

Le Tour de FranceWe have to admit that we’re a little partial to this race as it’s Briana’s first half-marathon! Taking place on August 29, 2009, this is the event’s first year, which was one reason Briana decided to run it!

The course runs through downtown Madison, through the University of Wisconsin- Madison’s campus, and around the west side of the city. Race events begin with a pasta dinner the night before and end with a post-race party at Memorial Union Registration is capped at 2500 participants.

Here’s a simple 5-mile along the lakeshore to run the week of the race. Or if you’re already in Madison, try this 10-mile run.

Win a Garmin Forerunner 305 Watch!

Now you can be just like Adam by winning a Garmin Forerunner 305 watch. It's a GPS receiver with a heart rate monitor, and it also provides precise speed, distance and pace data. To paraphrase Adam, he uses it and loves it for tracking his runs.

The competition is quite simple and goes like this: Beginning at 10 a.m. CST on Wednesday, July 29 (like right now) and ending at 12 p.m. CST on Friday, July 31, use the new "share" feature to share a route with your friends on Twitter and Facebook.

You can share multiple routes but ultimately each person will only be considered once. The winner will be chosen at random from all entries and announced on Twitter and Facebook on Monday, August 3 at 10 a.m. CST.

Here's a tip!

Briana’s Upcoming
Half-Marathon

Whoa, nerves! With about a month to go, I’m beginning to get nervous that I won’t be able to run all the way through! My training program just picked up to 19 miles this week, running an eight-mile day, followed by a two, a seven, and another two-mile day. For my long runs I run down to the lakeshore path so I can have an (hopefully) uninterrupted run. My basic route is this, with a few alterations depending on the mileage. Quite simple.

I will take all the advice I can get, so let me know what has worked for you!
Stay tuned for the September newsletter in which I will tell you all about my experience. Yes, please get excited
with me!

National Foot Health Month

What do you do to keep your feet healthy? Read what Hal Higdon has to say about keeping your feet healthy with properly fitting shoes, replacing worn-out shoes, and how to choose nonrunning shoes. Bonus for our fellow Chicagoans- Higdon quotes Dave Zimmer, owner of Fleet Feet Sports, on how to choose the correct socks.

Don’t forget to keep your toes strong. This article outlines toe exercises to help keep your toes in tip-top shape.

Some tips from Higdon’s article:

  • Attend to blisters, calluses, and ingrown toenails as soon as they arrive.
  • Exercise your toes three times a week by doing toe rises and heel drops (further explained in the article)
  • Keep your feet dry!
  • Get professionally fitted for your running shoes at a specialty running store
