New Year, New President… New You!
Here at WalkJogRun.net we’re taking the New Year as an opportunity to make some changes. First, as you’ll see, we slightly changed to format of the newsletters to include spotlight sections on races and events. And second, we’ve added a Facebook application that allows you to share routes you've created with your Facebook friends.
So, come along with us into the New Year. Look ahead and get excited. Perhaps this is the year to set a goal to run your first 5k or your 6th marathon.
And as always, if you're having any trouble reading this email try viewing it in your browser. |
Race of the Month: Walt Disney World® Marathon
First up is the 2009 Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend. The event takes place Thursday, January 8 to Sunday, January 11,2009.
To give your legs a rest before and after the races, we’ve compiled some relaxing things to do around town:
- For music lovers, on January 10, 2009 the Festival of Orchestras is presenting the Dublin Philharmonic Orchestra at the Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre and the jam/funk band Galactica plays at the House of Blues.
- The Orlando Magic has a home game on Friday, January 9, 2009 against the Atlanta Hawks. Find tickets here.
- Downtown Orlando is full of culture, with many diverse restaurants to satiate any appetite. If you’d like to stay closer to Disney, various resorts offer breakfast, lunch and dinner with Disney characters.
- Granted the weather will be a little cooler than typical beach weather, but you can build a mini Disney World sand castle at Daytona Beach, which is about an hour away from the Disney World Resort.
New Year, New You
There’s no other energizing time like the New Year to improve or enhance your daily routines, or even start fresh. Perhaps 2009 is the year to run your first race or run another marathon.
One simple step in achieving your goal is to eat foods that contribute to optimizing your body’s potential. Nutritionist Liz Applegate, Ph.D. has compiled a list of foods runners should have in their carts every time they grocery shop. The list includes foods that contain essential vitamins and minerals to keep muscles healthy and your body energized:
- Whole-grain bread and pasta
- Chicken
- Whole-grain cereal with protein
- Sweet potatoes
- Oranges
- Canned black beans
- Mixed salad greens
- Dark chocolate
- Frozen mixed berries
- Low-fat yogurt
- Salmon

Destination:
Washington, D.C.
The dawn of a new presidential term is upon us, which makes the Inauguration location of Washington, D.C. the perfect first “destination” spotlight for our newsletter.

Washington, D.C. will surely be the place to be on January 20, 2009. With an estimated 4-5 million visitors expected to inundate the city, it may be hard to find a place away from fellow tourists.
