April 2008

Hey there!
It's Adam and Jeff from WalkJogRun.net. When you created your account on the site, you asked us to keep you updated about the site so here you go. We hope you find this email helpful - and as always we love to hear from our users, so send us a note!

And if you're having any trouble reading this email, try viewing it in your browser.

10 Tips for Greening Your Run

We're always looking for more good tips on how to have a better run, so Adam was pleased to jot down the following ideas from a recent presentation by Ecoscene, a new resource that reviews eco-friendly products and services.

  1. Eat high-fiber wheat pasta during the week, but eat white the night before to avoid any unnecessary bathroom breaks during your training runs.
  2. Try apple juice instead of Gatorade to hydrate before the race and rehydrate afterwards.
  3. Consider buying a solar-powered charger for your Ipod for about $100.
  4. Clif Bar produces organic versions of energy bars, GU, and shot blocks.
  5. Consider buying smart wool or ice wool for your next running shirt. It's an organic, natural fiber.
  6. Use Stevia in place of other artificial sweeteners as it is all-natural and better for your body.
  7. Sigg bottles are made of stainless steel are a preferred choice over disposable plastic bottles that absorb germs, or re-useable polycarbonate bottle which can release toxins at room temperature.
  8. Recycle your old shoes with Share Your Soles or Nike Reuse-A-Shoe
  9. Always wash your running gear in cold water. It's better for the material and saves energy.
  10. An alternative post-race drink is lemon water made from lemon concentrate and water.

Demographics added to Account creation

Since we're looking for advertisers (as you may have noticed in the upper-right of this email), and they like to know a little bit about the demographics of who they're advertising to, you may have noticed the addition of two important questions in the registration process.

We've added a place for visitors to let us know the year you were born and whether you are male or female. We will never sell any personal information. We are only interested in the aggregate statistics in order to help convince advertisers that our site would be a good place to buy ad space and so we can make impressive charts (advertisers like numbers and charts).

For instance, we now know that 55% of you are female and the average age of a WalkJogRun member is 32.2 years old. Our oldest WalkJogRunner is 62 and our youngest is 15 years old.

If you would like to help us out but didn't complete these questions when you initially registered, we have added a new "Profile" page. You can also use this to change things like your username, registered email address and password.

Welcome Emails

It only took us 3 years, but the penny finally dropped that we should send you an email when you sign up to confirm your account, introduce ourselves and let you know some tips to making a fast start with the site.

If you signed up anytime before last week and would actually like to see the ten top tips, you can check it out here.

Advertising available

To continue to keep this site free for you all to use, but keep it moving forward with new features we're looking for advertising partners for the site and the email we send out (yeah, like this one). This email goes out to just over 14,000 walkers, joggers and runners approximately once per month. If you would be interested in buying ad space in this email please let us know.

You're not alone

Have you ever wondered how many other people use the site? Where are these people? Well now you can find out! WalkJogRun Live lets you see where in the world other people are on the site at this very moment in time. Of course it's not that helpful for running or route planning but we thought it was just fun to sit and marvel as you witness somebody in Africa or Australia show up on the map.

Shout out to Mike Pegg of GoogleMapsMania

A big thanks to Mike Pegg at GoogleMapsMania for helping get the word out about WJR. If you haven't seen Mike's site, he blogs about the newest Google Maps features and web sites using Google Maps. Go check it out.
