Last long run done before the half marathon!

We romped home in 1:42 for our 10 mile run today wrapping up the long runs required for our training! We were both a little under the weather on Thursday so we missed the 5 mile run we were supposed to do but in some ways it was great to take the extra rest. This week we just have 4 miles, 3 miles then 2 on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday respectively before the big race next Sunday.

Melissa did great today, especially considering it was the first time she has ever run 10 miles. I got a little frustrated at the end because we missed the "400 meters to go" announcement on our iPods and because we were running a slightly different route it bugged me that I couldn't visualize the finish. It was a nice surprise though when Melissa turned to say "oh, I guess that's it!", even if my reaction wasn't the best. One bottle of gatorade and a handful of pretzels later we're going to shower and head out for a nice panini to reward ourselves.

Nicely done Howitts! And Melissa, congrats on such a big milestone. Good luck next weekend!

sylvia's Gravatar congrats! ten miles definitely feels substantial, but it's like you also start to feel like you could run forever. I am training for my second half marathon (the virginia beach rock n roll), and I feel like I have had "second-half-marathoners ego" all summer (i.e. not keeping up my training to the degree I should have) plus some tendonitis got in the way. Anyhow, this site keeps me on track with my mileage. Great listening to your story!

Adam Howitt's Gravatar Hi Sylvia,
Thanks! I know what you mean about the ego. I did the full San Francisco marathon last year and was really strict with my training and finished in 4:06. This year I did the San Diego marathon and was little more relaxed and had a horrible experience. I've been really strict since San Diego in my half marathon training after my tendonitis passed and I'm ready to really enjoy the Chicago Distance Classic this Sunday. Just hope the humidity goes away - it's been like running in a steam room for the past week.

sylvia's Gravatar Oh gosh, I feel for you. If anything makes me feel weak it's the heat! Good luck this Sunday! I'll tune in and see how it went for you- not in terms of time, but in terms of the experience.
Thanks for your advice about the "ego" with the second race. Tomorrow morning I'm doing 12 mile run in preparation for my half at the end of the month, and if that goes well I'm hoping to go for a full marathon in December in Sacramento. We'll see what happens, but I'm optimistic.
